The Suicide Squad Director Reveals Harley Quinn’s Injustice-inspired Concept Art

The Suicide Squad writer-director James Gunn has revealed some pieces of Christian Cordella concept art from the DC Extended Universe reboot film, featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. What’s more, Gunn has confirmed that the outfit worn by Harley in The Suicide Squad‘s opening beach sequence was directly inspired by the character’s outfit from the DC-themed fighting video game Injustice 2.

On Twitter, Gunn explained that Cordella crafted the artwork under the direction of costume designer Judianna Makovsky. The images feature Harley’s beach uniform, as well as the red dress she dons later in The Suicide Squad. “The dress was one of the first designs — here’s a version before we settled on the red and black hair (which was very early),” Gunn wrote. “The beach uniform was inspired by her outfit in the Injustice 2 video game.”

Developed by NetherRealm Studios (of Mortal Kombat fame) and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Injustice 2 released in 2017. The game serves as a sequel to NetherRealm and Warner Bros.’ Injustice: Gods Among Us, which released a few years earlier in 2013.

Interestingly enough, Injustice is itself currently headed for feature film adaptation from Warner Bros. Animation, with Community alum Gillian Jacobs starring as the voice of Harley Quinn. Scheduled for release on Oct. 19, The Injustice animated movie takes its cues from the first video game, as well as the Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One comic book series written by Tom Taylor.

Meanwhile, The Suicide Squad released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max earlier this year on Aug. 5. Written and directed by Gunn, the film serves as a reboot/standalone sequel to the 2016 DCEU film Suicide Squad, which was written and directed by David Ayer. In The Suicide Squad, Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn from Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey. Robbie is one of four actors from Ayer’s film to return for Gunn’s, the other three being Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang.

Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot also features a wide array of newcomers, including Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker and John Cena as Peacemaker, among many others. Cena will return for a Peacemaker spinoff series, which is expected to premiere on HBO Max in January.
