Venom 2: Anne Escapes Her Comics Fate – for Now | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now playing in theaters

The Venom symbiote has the ability to hop between hosts with relative ease, doing so multiple times in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Although Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is its main host, it also has moved around to other people, but perhaps the only other true match is Anne Weying (Michelle Williams), Eddie’s ex, but her bond with Venom in the sequel could be her last.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage teases Anne’s departure from the series by giving her and Eddie closure about their relationship, as the latter goes on the run. However, her brief reappearance as Venom quietly teases that she wouldn’t mind more time with the symbiote.

Anne was introduced in Venom as a lawyer working for the Life Foundation. Engaged to Eddie Brock, she broke things off after he used her personal email to  find evidence of Carlton Drake’s crimes. She spent most of the film dating Dan Lewis (Reid Scott) and avoiding Eddie, but Anne would later try to help her ex-boyfriend. She even briefly bonded with Venom, effectively becoming the cinematic incarnation of She-Venom before passing the symbiote back to Eddie. A year later in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, she reveals that things have moved forward with Dan, and they’re engaged.

However, she wants to help Eddie, as she still cares about him, and she proves to be the one person he can trust with information about Venom. Upon finding the symbiote, who had separated itself from Eddie, Anne convinces it to give Eddie another chance — leading to her and the symbiote re-fusing. They find Eddie and break him out of custody, and she transfers the symbiote back over to Eddie. After barely surviving the climax of the film, Eddie elects to go on the run with the symbiote, sharing a genuine goodbye with Anne and Dan. This could be a graceful way for Anne to exit the series, as Venom sets himself to become a globe-trotting Lethal Protector even before being seemingly shunted over to another reality.

This would also allow Anne to escape her comics fate, where-in the Anne of Earth-616 was driven over the edge by her connection to the more villainous comics incarnation of Eddie and the symbiote. There, she was left a wreck after their time together — eventually taking her own life in Amazing Spider-Man #19 by David Michelinie and Mark Bagley.

However, there are hints that Anne could return, less because of Eddie and more because of the symbiote. She mentions enjoying the feeling of being bonded with Venom, and the symbiote thinks highly of her. It’s possible in times of trouble, the symbiote could try to rally her to their aid. Plus, if something happened to Eddie, she’d likely be the first person the symbiote would try to find. While she has the potential to exit the franchise,Venom: Let There Be Carnage quietly teases that she could one day decide to redon the symbiote for herself.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage stars Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson, and is now in theaters.
