Doom Patrol: Is Madame Rouge a Hero or Villain? | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Doom Patrol Season 3, Episode 1, “Possibilities Patrol” now streaming on HBO Max.

Doom Patrol executive producer Jeremy Carver shared some new information about Madame Rouge, which might help fans decide if the character will be a hero or villain on the show.

“It tells us a lot about Madame Rouge that even she doesn’t quite realize about herself yet,” Carver told TVLine. “It kicks off this process of discovery for her, which is sort of a study in contradictions — she can’t quite figure out if she’d good or if she’s bad. We drop little hints both ways, and I think that’s what makes the struggle even more confounding for her.”

It was announced back in March that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina alum Michelle Gomez would step into the role of Madame Rouge in Season 3 of Doom Patrol. Speaking about Gomez being cast, Carver said at the time, “This wrestling with ‘Am I good or bad?’ is really at the heart of Michelle’s character arc this season, and she wrings more out of a line in terms of finding comedy or pathos than just about anybody. I think what she brings to the show is just thrilling.”

Madame Rouge, a.k.a. Laura De Mille, debuted in 1964’s Doom Patrol #86, by Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani. She is best known as the only female member of the Brotherhood of Evil, a group of DC supervillains that also includes the likes of The Brain and Monsieur Mallah. It’s believed the Brotherhood of Evil will play a big role in Doom Patrol’s third season.

Gomez made her debut as the character in the Season 3 premiere when Madame Rouge arrived in the present day in a time machine, looking for the recently deceased Niles Caulder. The time machine’s arrival, however, create a giant chasm in which Isabel fell to her death.

The producer added that the remainder of Season 3 will see Madame Rouge learning more about herself and coming to a more clear decision about whether she wants to confront some truths about her past or not. “In terms of her being a completely different person, I would argue — and I think the show would argue — that you can try as hard as possible, but none of us can quite escape who we are,” he concluded.

The first four episodes of Doom Patrol Season 3 are now streaming on HBO Max. New episodes will premiere weekly on Thursdays.
