Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis revealed which scene in the sequel best emulates the infamous “lobster tank” moment from 2018’s Venom.
“I think the one of the scenes that kind of grew out of what was originally on the page, something quite small, I think, is basically the apartment fight,” Serkis told CBR of the scene, which shows Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock going at it with the Venom symbiote during an especially heated moment in their relationship.
“So the apartment fight, when they’ve reached this kind of cataclysmic moment where they no longer can bear each other’s company and they end up really having a go at each other,” he continued. “It starts off with a very personal attack on Venom, and then escalates and escalates.”
The first film features a scene in which Brock and Venom face off, which ends with Brock/Venom chomping on a live lobster while sitting inside the lobster tank in a fancy restaurant. It was later revealed that the scene wasn’t actually in the script, but it ended up being one of the most memorable scenes in the film.
Serkis noted that, similar to that scene, the apartment fight in Venom: Let There Be Carnage quickly evolved during filming. “That was literally just going to be a row, and then maybe a bit of a slap from Venom, but it ended up being this whole thing,” he explained. “I think that, sort of tonally, goes some close place to being the madness of their relationship. It was a lobster tank moment, if you like.”
The director also recently revealed that the Venom sequel was initially named after a Joy Division song, but the title was ultimately rejected. “We did think for a moment it might be called ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart,’ that was a going concern for a little while,” Serkis shared. “But Let There Be Carnage just seems to do it. There wasn’t a lot of fighting over the other titles we were thinking of. Because this was such a strong contender.”
While Let There Be Carnage technically hit theaters on Oct. 1, the film brought in an impressive $11.6 million on Thursday, Sept. 30. In doing so, the sequel finished just shy of the $13.2 million brought in by Black Widow in theaters on opening night. Let There Be Carnage is estimated to earn $40-60 million at the domestic box office over its opening weekend.
Directed by Andy Serkis and starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom and Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady/Carnage, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is now in theaters.
