Netflix has announced the release window and setting for the hotly anticipated third season of The Umbrella Academy.
A brief teaser was uploaded to the series page on Netflix, which sees an animatic of a bird landing on an umbrella, indicating Season 3 will focus on the Academy’s variant-timeline counterparts in the Sparrow Academy. It then shifts to a concierge bell, which seems to confirm many fans’ suspicions that part of the season will take place in or around the Hotel Oblivion, the extra-dimensional prison where Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) kept his most dangerous enemies. Finally, the teaser confirms The Umbrella Academy will return with new episodes in 2022.
Additionally, Netflix also shared a video celebrating the collective birthday of the various super-powered students that make up both academies. In the video, Justin H. Min addresses the viewers directly while in character as Ben Hargreeves. “On October 1, 1989, the Sparrow Academy was born. You’re welcome,” he says. “And while we appreciate grand gestures, we don’t need gifts, mere citizens. We are the gift. So happy birthday to us.”
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will pick up where Season 2 left off. After averting the end of the world in 1963, the Academy returned to the present, where they were shocked to find how their timeline was changed. Sir Reginald is still alive and now leading the Sparrow Academy, alongside the also still alive Ben, who fills the position of Sparrow Number Two and is described as a “Machiavellian tactician, wrapped up in a pretty boy body with a rumbling inner-squid.” The rest of the Sparrows were cast this past January: Justin Cornwell as Marcus/Number One, Britne Oldford as Faye/Number Three, Jake Epstein as Alphonso/Number Four, Genesis Rodriguez as Sloane/Number Five and Cazzie David as Jayme/Number Six. The casting of the final Sparrow, Christopher — an “Existential Dread-Inducing Psykronium Cube” — has not yet been announced.
After filming was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Umbrella Academy wrapped production in August. The show celebrated with a video of the cast hyping up the new season. Elliot Page, who plays Vanya/Number Seven, said, “I’m stoked cause I can’t wait for you to see it and sad because I’ll miss everybody.” Emmy Raver-Lampman, who plays Allison/Number Three, added, “I don’t think the world’s ready for this. I think it’s our best season yet.”
The Umbrella Academy will return for a third season in 2022. The first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix.
