Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Gets Spring 2022 Release Date

Square Enix revealed a new gameplay trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin which also confirmed the game’s release date.

The story-focused trailer provides fans with a closer look at the game’s characters, settings and enemies. Chaos, the game’s antagonist who was comically over-mentioned in Stranger of Paradise‘s reveal at E3 2021, takes a back seat as various royal figures discuss some kind of encroaching evil. Players are tasked with tracking down four sacred crystals to prevent “the darkness” from consuming them.

The trailer closes with a brief line from Stranger of Paradise‘s main character stating that his name is Jack Garland, linking him to the first named antagonist in the original Final Fantasy video game. Considering the Final Fantasy  Origin sub-title, it’s likely that Square Enix’s spin-off action role-playing game will serve as a prequel to the original game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987.

“Jack and his comrades must hazard numerous challenges to bring the light of the crystals back to Cornelia, a kingdom conquered by darkness. Will restoring the crystals’ light usher in peace or a new form of darkness? … Or perhaps something else entirely?” reads the official video description for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

While Stranger of Paradise may be set within the world of the first Final Fantasy, it will utilize an entirely unique combat system, ditching the traditional turn-based format. Instead, players will be able to wade into the thick of battle themselves, making use of a variety of weapons and spells against a wide range of enemies.

When it was initially announced, Stranger of Paradise was widely mocked by fans of the greater Final Fantasy franchise. The game’s overly edgy aesthetic, uninspired character designs and wonky script left many skeptical regarding the spin-off’s quality. The term “Chaos” was often used to tease the game’s protagonist, whose passion to slay the all-powerful entity was seen as overwhelmingly annoying throughout the first trailer.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on March 18, 2022. A free demo of the game is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Players wanting to test the game will need to do so before Oct. 11 when the demo expires.
