Christopher Judge, the voice of Kratos in Sony Santa Monica’s modern God of War series explained why the game’s launch was pushed from 2021 to 2022.
Judge tweeted out that the delay was largely due to circumstances surrounding his wellbeing. “I need to be forthcoming. This has been approved by no one. To the beloved fandom, Ragnarok was delayed because of me,” writes Judge. “August 2019, I couldn’t walk. Had to have back surgery, both hips replaced, and, knee surgery. They waited for me too rehab…”
💯 in my feels right now. I need to be forthcoming. This has been approved by no one. To the beloved fandom, Ragnarok was delayed because of me. August 2019, I couldn’t walk. Had to have back surgery, both hips replaced, and, knee surgery. They waited for me too rehab…

Judge goes on to say that Sony Santa Monica was understanding of his injuries, treating the star’s recovery period with respect and patience. “No threats, no, ‘who do you think you are?’ Nothing but love and support. And [Sony Santa Monica] has never said a word about the delay, and what caused it. Studios are assholes, but this company from top to bottom, should give us hope,” writes Judge.
The reasoning behind the delay lines up with previous comments made by Herman Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, when God of War: Ragnarok was originally delayed. “So we have, currently, two very big, very narrative-driven games in development: Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War,” Hulst said. “And for both of those, they’re frankly affected by access to performance capture and talent,” continued Hulst, who goes on to say that Kratos’ latest adventure will not launch in 2021 but rather 2022.
“Everyone involved in the GofW franchise puts their hearts and souls in every frame you see. I want [to] thank everyone that’s has allowed me to play, and laugh, and love, and cry, without judgement, but with unconditional support and love, in this thing of ALL OF OURS,” concluded Judge.
God of War: Ragnarok is the latest installment in Sony’s long-running franchise. Picking up after the events of 2018’s God of War, Kratos and Atreus’ next adventure will see the pair go to war with the gods of Asgard in an effort to prevent the violent end of the world. A gameplay trailer, featuring a mythologically accurate Thor, debuted during the latest PlayStation showcase event.
While God of War: Ragnarok may not have a solid release date just yet, we do know it will mark the end of the franchise’s Norse saga. It will also release exclusively for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 although when that might be is currently unknown.
