Following the massive success of Netflix’s Korean drama Squid Game, one individual is feeling the effects of its popularity.
It turns out that the phone number on the card players receive throughout the series is active, and its owner has been on the receiving end of thousands of unsolicited phone calls. However, there’s one avenue to help ease his frustrations: a Korean presidential candidate.
Squid Game tells the story of people who are struggling with financial issues due to poor choices in life. Most of the main characters are facing life-or-death consequences of their actions. With all of the players headed down the same road of financial ruin, with death almost a certainty without money, they are offered the chance to participate in children’s games for cash, albeit with a deadly twist. Before their arrival at the facility, they are approached by a mysterious businessman who offers to give them money if they are willing to play a series of unspecified games. He leaves them with a card to call if they decide to play.
The digits on the card turned out to be a real South Korean phone number, resulting in thousands of calls from fans since the show’s premiere. According to reports, a Korean presidential candidate has offered to purchase the number from its owner for an astounding fee of approximately $85,000 USD. Huh Kyung-young, the National Revolutionary Party’s honorary chief, posted the offer on Facebook. “I heard that the owner of the phone number showed on a business card in Squid Game is suffering serious damage from prank calls. I would like to buy the number for 100 million won.”
As it stands, the man in question is receiving around four thousand calls a day, but is apparently reluctant to take the offer, as the number is linked to his business. He might have another saving grace, though, as Squid Game‘s production company is now said to be in negotiations to try and resolve the issue for him. Details regarding the production company’s offer have not been revealed.
The first season of Squid Game is now streaming on Netflix. As this time, a second season has not yet been announced.
