Venom: Let There Be Carnage Walks the Line of ‘Gratuitously Violent’

Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis stated that the movie walks a fine line when it comes to violence.

During an interview with Playstation Blog, Serkis was asked if he felt the weight of expectation when bringing Venom back to the silver screen. “Of course,” Serkis replied. “You always do. There are high expectations. People are very attached to these characters and they’ve all got their own opinions. They want to see their version they’ve had in their head for years come up on the screen. You have to imagine this Venn diagram of 1,000 different versions of a character that converge, then you’ve got your own version. I think what we managed to do feels pretty loyal.”

Serkis added that there is also a question of how dark and violent one should go with an adaptation, and whether it should be rated R. “There is a version where it could be,” he concluded. “You could have gone down that route. But we’re doing these stories for the biggest audience. I think we pushed it about as far as we could possibly go, without being sensationalist, overly gory or gratuitously violent. We pushed it right to the wire.”

Prior to its upcoming release, Venom: Let There Be Carnage was confirmed to be rated PG-13, while the film’s runtime was confirmed to be a sharp 97 minutes. Serkis had previously explained that the short runtime was for a storytelling reason.

“And a fast, muscular…not hanging around too much with exposition,” he said. “But having said that, I think what we’ve done is achieve a real balance between dropping anchor with all of the characters so that you feel that you’re fully immersed in them and that we’re not just rushing through to the next battle or action part.” Serkis later added that it was “about really nailing the tone, so that it always felt that the comedy was being supported by real emotion and pathos and real feelings” during the editorial process.

As for the lead actor himself, Tom Hardy has been actively discouraging fans from spoiling Let There Be Carnage. In addition to asking audiences at a preview that he attended with Serkis and Shriek actor Naomie Harris not to do so, Hardy also posted a graphic featuring Venom and the message “No Spoilers.”

Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There Be Carnage arrives in theaters on Oct. 1.
