Zack Snyder’s Justice League Unveils a Breakdown of its Visual Effects

Featuring more than two hours of additional footage over the original film, Zack Snyder’s Justice League required a significant amount of work from many talented VFX artists to be brought to life. Now, fans can see that hard work up close for themselves with a new visual effects breakdown reel for The Snyder Cut.

As shared by visual effects studio Scanline VFX, the video provides a work-in-progress look at what went into creating many of the most memorable visuals and sequences for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Everything from bringing the Bat Tank straight out of The Dark Knight Returns, to the motion capture progress of the imposing Steppenwolf, to Superman’s fight with the Justice League, to Flash’s climactic sprint and more are all featured.

Scanline VFX faced plenty of challenges bringing Zack Snyder’s Justice League to life, as the German studio was tasked with not only creating all-new characters and overhauling existing ones but adjusting the film’s aspect ratio among other changes — all during a global pandemic.

“The biggest factor was time and volume,” Julius Lechner, a VFX supervisor at Scanline, said during an interview with CBR earlier this year. “We worked on over 80 minutes of the movie over the course of roughly six months. The timeline didn’t allow for many mistakes, so we had to minimize errors and streamline every department where possible.”

Zack Snyder’s Justice League — or “The Snyder Cut,” as it’s referred to by the many fans who willed the film into existence — is the director’s reimaging of the original 2017 Justice League movie. The Snyder Cut was released on the HBO Max earlier this year, and is seen as closure for director Zack Snyder after the film’s initial theatrical release was taken over and reworked by Joss Whedon following a tragedy in Snyder’s family.

For more behind-the-scenes of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, fans can now check out the bonus features included the film’s DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD release, which was recently celebrated on social media. The Snyder Cut’s home release was so popular, in fact, that it topped the NPD VideoScan First Alert Chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray disc unit sales, during the film’s first week of home release.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is currently available on HBO Max, as well as on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
