Kevin Smith Discusses Two Phone Calls He Received from Kevin Feige

Kevin Smith had two phone calls with Marvel Cinematic Universe president Kevin Feige, and he’s hoping for another — though not an offer to direct a Marvel m0vie.

In an interview with Uproxx to promote his new coffee table book, Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash: The Definitive Visual History, Smith said that the first time he got a call from Feige was in 2018 while he was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack. “I was like, ‘I almost died, and now they’re going to offer me a Marvel movie,'” Smith said. “‘I’m going to have to turn this guy down, but this is lovely.'”

“He called, and he said the loveliest things, man,” Smith continued. “He goes, ‘Look. When I heard about the heart attack,’ he’s going, ‘it really affected me, because, as a kid from New Jersey who made a movie, you meant something to me. Your journey meant something to me. I’m so glad you’re alive.’ I’m like, ‘Thanks, man. That means a lot.’ I expected him to be like, ‘Okay, so, now, let’s get down to business,’ but he was like, ‘All right, Kev, be good,’ and hung up, and that was it.”

Smith’s second phone call with Feige concerned Stan Lee’s cameo in Captain Marvel, in which the late comic author was shown reading the script for Smith’s movie Mallrats, the first major movie Lee cameoed in. Smith said, “[Feige] called me one other time to tell me about the Stan Lee cameo in Captain Marvel. Even then, that time, I was like, I think he’s about to ask me to be in Captain Marvel and co-cameo with Stan. He was like, ‘No, we’e just looking for Stan’s voice.'”

Smith acknowledged his reputation as an enthusiastic Marvel fanboy and expressed hope that he will eventually be asked to make a cameo in the MCU, though he doesn’t want to direct any Marvel movies himself. “I think everyone knows what my relationship with the Marvel movies is… particularly at Marvel,” he said. “They’re like, ‘He’s a fan, and he will remain a fan, as far as we’re concerned.’ That’s for the best, man. I don’t have that kind of vision to pull that stuff off. Look, I’ll be honest with you. This is the call that I really want, Kevin Feige calling up and being like, ‘Will you be in one of these movies?’ That would be far more valuable to me than making one of those movies.”

Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash: The Definitive Visual History is now available in stores.
