Disney+ Renews The Mysterious Benedict Society for Season 2 | CBR

The Mysterious Benedict Society will return for a second season.

Disney+ announced that the show, based on the best-selling YA series by Trenton Lee Stewart, had been renewed for a new season that will being production in 2022. Creators and executive producers Matt Manfredi, Phil Hay, Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavin released a joint statement on the renewal, saying “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our journey into Trenton Lee Stewart’s witty, warm and wonderful world in a second season of The Mysterious Benedict Society. This has already been such a special experience, thanks to our remarkable cast and collaborators. The belief that 20th Television and Disney+ have shown in our show and their commitment to its values of kindness, empathy and the celebration of different ways of being make this all very much a joy.”

Tony Hale, who stars in the series as both the titular Nicholas Benedict and his antagonistic twin brother, Dr. Curtain, also announced the renewal on the Disney+ Instagram page via a riddle. Hale expressed gratitude for the series’ continuation, saying “This show has been an absolute thrill to work on and I’m so thankful to the fans and Disney for the opportunity to keep telling this incredible story.”

The first season of The Mysterious Benedict Society was met with critical acclaim and has an aggregate score of 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. CBR’s own Josh Bell said in his review, “Even if the show’s plot is slow to get started, the characters and visual style are charming — a junior version of the aesthetics and themes found in Wes Anderson and Tim Burton’s work. The Mysterious Benedict Society is kid-friendly, but not immature (likely due to the series originally being developed for Hulu, not Disney+) and cute without becoming cloying. Veteran comedy stars Tony Hale and Kristen Schaal are clearly having fun with their roles as mentors to the central kid characters, but there’s never any question that those kids are the real stars.”
