Ted Lasso surprised the world when it burst onto the scene, with it becoming so much more than just a sports show. It has several unique characters that bring absolute hilarity alongside some truly emotional and heartfelt moments.
While not every character is necessarily there to provide comedy, as some serious roles are necessary to make the whole show click, the overall chemistry between the actors and characters is clear for all to see. Everyone bounces off one another, making for some truly memorable moments. Season 1 used comedy often to establish itself, whereas Season 2 has taken a different approach, building drama and real emotion around the comedic core of the show. Overall, every character has had at least one comical moment that has stood out.
10 Dani Rojas’ Wholesome Catchphrase Is Turned On Its Head In A Morbidly Hilarious Twist
The Mexican ace continues to score even when Richmond is without Jamie Tartt. Dani Rojas’ catchphrase “football is life” appropriately expresses his joy and love for both football and life.
For this to then be spun around at the start of Season 2 to “football is death,” when he accidentally hits the club’s mascot greyhound, Earl, with a penalty shot, is morbidly hilarious. It was not his fault, as his penalty shot was on target and the dog was chasing a pigeon, but the whole situation gets to the usually joyful Dani. He is subsequently helped by the club’s new therapist, Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, repairing any damage done.
9 Sam Obisanya Calling On His Captain To Cut His Hair Is Wonderfully Entertaining
Sam is the kind-hearted and spirited young Nigerian of AFC Richmond’s squad. In Season 1, every single one of his scenes is wholesome and pleasant, especially compared to the likes of Jamie Tartt.
Season two delves more into his closeness with his family, his Nigerian pride, and his romantic life. A scene involving the latter, when he is preparing for a date, sees him undergo an almost ritualistic bit while getting a haircut from Isaac, the team captain. In a hilarious and light-hearted scene, the team’s newfound togetherness and complete chemistry make the chaos of Isaac’s hair-cutting skills a true spectacle.
8 Leslie Higgins Turned To Jazz When He Lost His Job
Leslie Higgins is arguably one of the most underrated Ted Lasso characters. From his reluctant yet hilarious following of Rebecca in the first season, to his genuinely wholesome character being showcased on multiple occasions, Higgins is a valued character and member of the AFC Richmond staff.
Among multiple hilarious scenes in the first season, Higgins is at his funniest in “All Apologies,” when an apologetic Rebecca is intent on making amends with everyone she has wronged, from Ted to Higgins. When she goes to Higgins’s house, she finds him playing the double bass, sporting a questionable jazz beard, fashioned since his departure from Richmond. Although it is obviously his way of dealing with troubles, it is still a hilarious sight, which Rebecca promptly laughs at, even while apologizing.
7 Jamie Tartt Tanked His Beer Press Shoot With Some Spectacular Puns
Despite Keeley and Jamie’s breakup, they still go ahead with a press shoot with Jamie being revealed as a new brand ambassador for the beer, Darsteiner, which Keeley had already arranged. Although this eventually lands Keeley a full-time job working on branding for AFC Richmond, Jamie Tartt is undoubtedly the star of this scene.
From holding a beer to his forehead and asking everyone in attendance if they like mythology and if they have heard of a “brewnicorn, a brew unicorn,” to cradling the beer like a “beerby,” Jamie’s press shoot is not really a success by any means but is one of many hilariously silly moments from the star goal-scorer.
6 Coach Beard Is Funny Even When Being Dead Serious
Coach Beard is Ted Lasso’s number two, so he’s often seen with the main man himself, with the two complementing and bouncing off one another perfectly. However, Beard does also have some great moments by himself, from his passionate karaoke rendition of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance to a whole episode dedicated to his nighttime adventures.
Even when he tells off Nate for being rude to Colin, which is a serious moment in itself, his sudden exit and disappearance the moment that Nate turns around, adds a classic humorous Coach Beard touch to the scene, adding to his generally bizarre and mysterious persona.
5 Roy Kent Being Himself Even When Coaching Young Children Is Television Gold
As a player for AFC Richmond, Roy Kent was angry on and off the pitch. So when he retires between Seasons 1 and 2, he is caught in somewhat of a limbo period. When it is revealed that his immediate choice is to coach his niece Phoebe and her fellow under 9s, it makes for a hilarious transition and interaction.
Roy continuing to be himself around children, was shown in the first season with him swearing in front of Phoebe both at home and in school, but Roy coaching the next generation of girl footballers with his unfiltered approach is typical Roy Kent. Most of Roy’s hilarity in Ted Lasso comes from his anger and constant swearing, but this moment in itself is one of the best.
4 Nervous & Clumsy Nate Produced Countless Amazing Moments
Nathan Shelley has undergone a pretty intensive character development throughout Ted Lasso. From being the awkward kit man lacking in confidence and self-belief, to having that belief instilled in him by Ted, leading to confidence becoming arrogance, putting Nate on a path that could well end in disaster for someone.
His shy and clumsy persona in the first season provides many laughs, with one prime example being when he tries to impress an angry Roy Kent by matching his anger, saying “I am equally livid,” shockingly elbowing and shattering Ted’s office’s window.
3 Keeley & Roy’s First Real Interaction Was Playful & Keeley Impersonated Roy Perfectly
In “Trent Crimm: The Independent,” there is the first real sign of Keeley and Roy Kent’s chemistry when they bump into one another in the car park. Keeley annoys and tricks Roy when he claims that he cannot be manipulated or have his buttons pushed, prompting her to do exactly that. She then follows it up with a great impression of the angry man himself.
Most of Keeley’s best scenes are due to her boundless energy and enthusiasm, not to mention her friendship with Rebecca, but this particular moment, while effectively being foreshadowing considering the two of them getting together in the future, is also a great back-and-forth.
2 The Often Serious Rebecca Does Also Have Her Funny Moments
Rebecca is generally one of the more serious characters within Ted Lasso, from her being the scheming antagonist for most of the first season while dealing with her soul-crushing divorce to being the strong and capable woman having to deal with new problems and issues. While comedic scenes tend to happen around her or with another character bouncing off her, she is still vital to the whole identity of the show.
While her scenes with her best friends Sassy and Keeley see her at her liveliest and happiest, it’s her post-confession friendship with Higgins that is a joy to watch. The two of them jazz-scatting to defuse the tension when Roy walks in on them talking about him, is equal parts awkward and hilarious, with them even resuming it when Roy leaves the room.
1 Ted Lasso’s Alter Ego Is A Whole New Form Of Hilarity Compared To His Usual References & Word-Play
Ted Lasso is the titular character and main point of focus during the show. Almost every conversation during the first season that involves Ted is littered with references and phrases, delivered at such a seamless rate that they almost seem normal.
However, in Season 2, in a desperate attempt to draw attention and hatred away from the returning Jamie Tartt, Ted unleashes his alter ego, Led Tasso, who is essentially an angry and aggressive opposite of the normally kind and spirited Ted. Despite being a mere tactical technique, the extreme change in character is still shocking and hilarious, making it stand out amidst all of his clever word-play and references.
