WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If…? Season 1, Episode 7, “What If… Thor Were An Only Child?,” streaming now on Disney+.
Marvel has debuted a poster for What If…? which cordially invites viewers to the unexpected wedding that took place amid the madness of the series’ recent “Party Thor” episode.
In the episode, titled “What If…Thor Were An Only Child?”, the series’ newest twist on the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced viewers to an alternate version of Thor known as “Party Thor.” Without Loki to check and balance him growing up, this incarnation of the Norse god and eventual Avenger grew up so irresponsible that he regularly throws parties wild enough to trash entire planets. Thor’s rager on Midgard sparks an unlikely romance between Darcy Lewis and Howard the Duck. As the mayhem of the party begins to spiral, Darcy and Howard actually end up tying the knot. Marvel has doubled down on the gag, sharing an internet-wide wedding invitation on Twitter as a poster to promote the episode.
The Party Thor episode contained a myriad of fun moments, including a bombastic battle between MCU powerhouses Thor and Captain Marvel, the induction of a new “science bro” with a questionable tattoo, and one bit of dialogue seemingly confirming that unicorns exist in some distant corner of Marvel’s evergrowing multiverse. However, the standout running joke in the episode quickly became the unconventional partnership between Darcy and Howard.
In their early encounters, Darcy shoots down Howard’s romantic advances, but before they know it, the spirit of the party sweeps them away, and Darcy ends up becoming “Mrs. The Duck.” The wedding takes place in Las Vegas and is officiated by an Elvis impersonator, whose immortal words echoed in Marvel’s poster tweet.
“We now pronounce you Darcy and the Duck,” the tweet from Marvel stated, adding, “You’re invited to stream the seventh episode of Marvel Studios’ What If…? on Disney+.”
In the Marvel comics, Howard the Duck debuted in 1973 as an ill-tempered anthropomorphic bird trapped on the human-dominated Earth. His misadventures were often satires of typical comic book stories, eventually cementing him as a cult favorite. His popularity led to a Howard the Duck film adaptation in 1986, which flopped both critically and financially.
However, the onscreen iteration of Howard the Duck found redemption in the MCU as he made brief comedic appearances in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In What If…?, he also popped up in “What If…T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?”. The Party Thor episode of What If…? marked the first time the character appeared onscreen alongside his now-spouse, Darcy, whose MCU history includes the first two Thor movies and this year’s WandaVision.
Marvel’s What If…? airs new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.
