The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan teased that a spinoff series about his character, Negan, could still happen.
“There’ve been things discussed with me and network people,” the actor told TVLine. “We’ll see. I mean, Negan could still find his way six feet under [before Season 11 concludes], so that could be a problem unless it’s a prequel.” Morgan, who has portrayed Negan since The Walking Dead‘s Season 6 finale added, however, that there are definitely “still stories to be told with Negan.”
“I kind of know how the season has worked itself so far,” he continued. “And we’re cracking open windows here and there that would lend themselves to more Negan story.”
Morgan’s latest comments mark the first time he’s discussed a potential Negan spinoff since he told talk show host Conan O’Brien in April that “it’s definitely being talked about.” “I think they’re thinking about a couple different ideas,” Morgan said at the time. “But I’ve definitely had conversations about possibly continuing the story of Negan.” The actor also previously discussed Negan’s future during a Twitter Q&A with Walking Dead fans.
While the eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead is airing now on AMC, fans may recall that the final episode of Season 10, a bonus episode called “Here’s Negan,” explored the character’s origin and delved into the events that led to Negan abandoning his position as a high school gym teacher and becoming the leader of The Saviors. The episode, which was based on a standalone volume of The Walking Dead comic series, also starred Morgan’s real wife Hilarie Burton Morgan as Negan’s wife Lucille.
If a Negan spinoff comes to fruition, it would be the latest in a series of Walking Dead spinoffs. Fear the Walking Dead premiered in 2015 and follows a blended family experiencing the zombie apocalypse both before and during the events of the original series. Season 7 of the show is set to debut on Oct. 17. Meanwhile, The Walking Dead: World Beyond premiered in October 2020 and serves as a limited series, focusing on a group of teenagers coming of age 10 years after the zombie apocalypse. The second and final season of the limited series will debut on Oct. 3.
Additionally, AMC previously announced that a spinoff centered on Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon and Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier, as well as an anthology series featuring stories from The Walking Dead Universe, are both in the works.
The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews. New episodes of Season 11 air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and is available to stream early on AMC+.
