Black Canary Writer Teases Dinah’s Comics-Accurate Costume | CBR

Actor Jurnee Smollett may don Black Canary‘s iconic costume in her reprisal for the DC character’s planned HBO Max film.

Black Canary writer Misha Green hosted a Q&A session on Twitter on Wednesday where she took fan questions regarding the upcoming film. Along with assuring fans she was reading the comics for research, Green seemed to hint Smollett’s Dinah Lance will finally sport her iconic costume. When a fan asked Green if she happened to like biker jackets and fishnets, a reference to Lance’s look in the comics, Green response with, “LOVE biker jackets and fishnets.” She finished her response with a teasing winking face.

Like her fellow Birds of Prey stars, Smollett’s initial turn as Dinah Lance saw the character sporting a much different look than the comics. In that film, Lance was seen sporting a yellow spaghetti tank top with high-waisted blue jeans. It’s a far more casual look for the character, whereas Dinah in the comics is notorious for her black leather jacket, bodysuit and fishnets.

News that Smollett and Green would team up for an HBO Max Black Canary solo film was first announced in August. This will mark the third project the duo has teamed up on following Underground and Lovecraft Country. While promoting Lovecraft Country, Smollett and Green had both shown interest in developing a Black Canary spinoff from Birds of Prey.

Prior to the news that HBO Max was developing a Black Canary standalone film, fans rallied online to try and get #BlackCanaryHBOSeries to trend with the hopes of getting the streaming service to order a Black Canary series. The campaign was in part to celebrate the actor’s birthday in April, with it eventually having taken off on Twitter. While fans did not secure a series, Smollett finally got her wish to return as the character in a standalone film.

As of right now, Black Canary does not yet have a director attached or a release date on HBO Max.
