The meditation tool Calm is looking to bring some friends along to ease kids to sleep.
The app, which first launched in 2012, is ramping up its original content for kids, as reported by Variety. Calm is hoping parents will be willing to spend $70 a year on the meditation and mental-wellness app for their children. As part of its original content, Calm has teamed with some major celebrities including the likes of Pink, Maya Rudolph and Diane Keaton. Of the newly announced titles, though, there’s one that stands out among the rest: Illumination Entertainment’s Minions.
Calm has already enlisted Trolls actor Anna Kendrick to narrate stories set within the Trolls universe, as well as actor Kate Winslet to narrate stories based on Mattel’s Thomas & Friends. Now it’s looking to add to its growing children’s content collection by bringing in Pink, Maya Rudolph, Wanda Sykes, Randall Park, Diane Keaton, Stephen “tWitch” Boss and others to narrate new stories. Details regarding which properties the new additions will narrate were not made available.
Other projects in development for Calm are Sleep Stories with Hasbro’s Peppa Pig, DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions. It remains to be seen how Calm intends to use the Minions for its product, as the lovable yellow creatures are known for being hard to understand.
Calm intends to release new Calm Kids Sleep Stories every Sunday “to help unlock a truly magical bedtime routine for families,” according to VP of content Greg Justice. The decision to expand the company’s output for kids comes as Justice explains Calm feels “an urgency” to help kids after a difficult year. “It’s been very stressful for young people in the past year, so we are doubling down on all things Calm Kids.”
While Calm does have some content available for free, full access to the app costs $69.99 annually or $400 for a lifetime subscription.
