Ghostbusters: Afterlife Drops a Pair of Ominous Posters | CBR

Sony Pictures has released a pair of ominous posters for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The one-sheets highlight the cast of the upcoming legacy-quel, including Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd. Notably, however, neither poster lists an official release date for Ghostbusters: Afterlife and simply tease that the movie is “Coming soon exclusively to cinemas.”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the second sequel to Ghostbusters (1984) and the third live-action entry in the paranormal horror/comedy property since that film came out, including the 2016 reboot. Jason Reitman, whose father Ivan Reitman helmed the first two Ghostbusters movies, co-wrote and directed Afterlife, with several actors from the original Ghostbusters reprising their roles. What’s more, the film reportedly honors the late Harold Ramis — who co-created the franchise with Dan Aykroyd and played Egon Spengler — with a plot that centers on Egon’s now-grown daughter and grandchildren.

Originally scheduled to open in theaters on July 10, 2020, Ghostbusters: Afterlife has seen its release date delayed four times over the course of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The film is now scheduled to arrive in November, though that may change if the box office sees a significant drop-off in the weeks ahead. Whatever happens, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra has insisted Afterlife and the studio’s other “major films” will retain their theatrical-exclusive window before releasing on streaming, as indicated by Afterlife‘s posters.

In a bid to generate hype, Sony hosted an early screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife during its CinemaCon panel in August. Those who reacted to the movie on Twitter were mostly positive in their outlook, with We Live Entertainment‘s Scott Manzel writing, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the Ghostbusters sequel that I’ve been waiting all my life to see. It is nostalgia done right. A perfect blend of classic Ghostbusters moments with a fresh [and] unique twist for a whole new generation to enjoy.” Whether critics and/or general audiences agree with that sentiment is another matter.

Assuming the film doesn’t move from its current spot, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will open in theaters on Nov. 19. Its competition looks to include the biopic King Richard, which arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day, with more titles arriving five days later over the Thanksgiving holiday frame.
