An actor from The Witcher has joined Amazon’s The Wheel of Time in the recasting of a major character for Season 2.
According to Deadline, The Witcher star Dónal Finn will replace Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon in the second season of the Amazon original series. A reason for the recasting wasn’t given, though fans will see Harris’ Mat Cauthon when Season 1 debuts Nov. 19.
The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins recently discussed what went into the casting of Cauthon, Rand al’Thor and Perrin Aybara. “Mat and Perrin are so much more than sidekick characters,” Judkins said. “Sometimes people felt like they didn’t really fall in love with those characters until some of the later books when they really got to know them and got to see their POV on the world. Hopefully in the show, right from the beginning – Marcus and Barney give such strong performances –they are a part of the ensemble right up front.”
“With Rand, we wanted to find an actor that really brought out not only the goodness of the character but also the complications, and really embodied this guy who was a shepherd in the mountains and never wanted this adventure that’s been thrust upon him,” he said.
New York Comic Con will include a panel for The Wheel of Time on Friday, October 8 at 2:30 p.m. EDT. The cast will be on hand, along with showrunner Rafe Judkins as they let fans in on how the show was brought to life, along with expectations heading into Season 1.
The Wheel of Time premieres Nov. 19 on Amazon Prime Video.
