What If…? introduced a large number of zombies in episode 5. Considering the fact that multiple films and series gave fans time to understand these characters’ powers and allowed fans to grow attached to these characters, seeing them as zombies came as even more of a shock.
People who were formerly heroes, whose goal was to protect as many people as possible, became an overwhelming threat to humanity. Although not every zombie was on screen for very long, some were scarier than others. The most shocking and frightening zombie was actually on screen for the least amount of time.
10 Ebony Maw Has Powerful Telekinetic Abilities
Ebony Maw’s powers are extremely daunting. He can restrain even the most powerful Avengers with little to no effort. Bruce Banner was helpless to do anything as Ebony Maw lifted into the air and prepared to eat him.
He can also modify his surroundings, crafting them into useful tools in battle. If he had not been defeated so quickly, he would have been a much more intimidating force in the episode.
9 Wong Can Use Portals, But They Are Used Against Him
Although Wong has similar powers to Doctor Strange, he isn’t considered as much of a threat because those powers are used against him. He uses a portal to get in front of Bruce Banner, but is held back on the other end by Doctor Strange’s cloak, which he completely ignores in favor of fruitlessly trying to get to Bruce.
His own portal closes in on himself, putting zombie Wong down for good.
8 Captain America Is Still A Super Soldier
What makes Steve Rogers so horrifying to see as a zombie is the fact that he of all people became a killing machine. The super-soldier serum originally made Steve stronger, and also amplified the best parts of his personality.
He used to be a kind-hearted person who put his own life on the line to protect others. As a zombie, he still has the powerful physical attributes and the shield, but none of the warmth.
7 Hawkeye Can Pin People Down
Clint Barton remains a stealthy archer, attacking both Happy Hogan and Sharon Carter from the shadows. When Happy’s back is turned, Hawkeye shoots a hook into him and drags him towards himself to infect him. He even manages to pin down Sharon with another arrow before she can even react, making the sight of slowly approaching zombies even more terrifying.
If Hawkeye had thought of infecting his arrows, most people wouldn’t have been able to stand a chance against him.
6 Iron Man Has His Technology
Tony Stark’s introduction is a genuinely creepy moment, as he sticks his hand out of a portal to attack an unsuspecting Ebony Maw. Although he never speaks in the episode, the fact that Happy Hogan is able to means that Tony may have access to some deadly technology, such as the Hulkbuster or E.D.I.T.H..
Despite his transformation, he seems to have no problems with utilizing his weapons.
5 Doctor Strange Uses Portals To Get From Place To Place
If Doctor Strange used the Time Stone, he would be nearly unstoppable. Dormammu would have had an even worse time if a zombie Doctor Strange kept him stuck in a loop. Having a stone that could foresee multiple futures would have been too powerful of an ability for a zombie to have.
However, even without the stone, Doctor Strange has a variety of magic spells. His portals are most deadly, allowing him to travel long distances in a short amount of time, and to pull off sneak attacks.
4 Hope Van Dyne Can Change Size
When Hope is zombified, she is seen in her towering, massive form. She throws a zombie at the Avengers, boasting a long-range attack with a terrifying projectile. This form isn’t as scary as Hank’s small one as she is a little slower, although it is still wise to stay as far away from her as possible.
Earlier in the episode, before her infection, she is seen exploding Shanon by rapidly growing inside of her, and commanding ants to eat some infected. If she has this same command over insects as a zombie, she could prove to be even more of a threat.
3 Hank Pym Infects People In A Tiny Form
Hank Pym retains his intelligence by attacking people in an incredibly efficient manner. He pilots himself and his wife out of the Quantum Realm after he is infected, and is able to freely change his size at will. He is seen in his tiny form, infecting Captain America, before growing back to normal size to continue his attack.
It is near impossible to avoid a bite from someone so tiny and agile.
2 The Scarlet Witch Still Has Her Magical Abilities
Wanda Maximoff may not have mastered her abilities the same way that the one in WandaVision did, but she is still incredibly powerful. After all, at this point in time, she was already considered one of the very few people who had a chance against Thanos.
She is able to drag Okoye towards her with her magic and is barely affected by Vision’s efforts to slow her down. Her powers also make her immune to Vision’s attempts to cure her with his Infinity Stone.
1 Thanos Has The Infinity Stones
Thanos is the largest threat that the Avengers ever had to face. He lives by a twisted moral code, believing that he has to wipe out half of all life in the universe in order for the other half to prosper. As a zombie hell-bent on doing nothing but eating and infecting people, he can do even worse things if he collects all of the stones.
Seeing Thanos arrive on Earth was upsetting enough, but the scene is much darker when he is infected.
