The Avengers are one of the greatest superteams of all time. Consisting of some of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe, the team is the Earth’s first and last line of defense against the most dangerous villains out there. Often times, the battles they fight are against some of the most powerful foes around and the team does a great job defending themselves against such threats.
While heavy hitters like Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Captain Universe have given the team the kind of might they need to handle anything, the team isn’t all powerful, as evidenced by their dealings with the Infinity Stones— or Infinity Gems as they were known for the majority of their existence. As powerful as they are, many Avengers can’t match the power of the Stones.
10 Hawkeye Is Just A Human With A Bow & Arrow
Hawkeye is one of the bravest Avengers of them all. He’s a human with a bow and arrow and he puts his body on the line to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. He doesn’t have fancy armor or an unbreakable shield or any kind of superpowers, just one of humanity’s oldest weapons— plus jokes for days.
Hawkeye has rarely had to deal with the Infinity Stones, as he was snapped out of existence during Infinity Gauntlet. He helped fight the Hood when he assembled them but knew better than to get too close, as he can’t compete with their power.
9 Black Widow Has A Big Goose Egg In The Win Column Against Infinity Stones
Black Widow is one of the greatest spies in the Marvel Universe but none of her vaunted skills helped her against the Infinity Stones. In Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos’s snap did more than just make people disappear. It caused massive natural disasters all over the universe, killing countless beings. Black Widow was injured saving people and was unable to participate in the battle against Thanos.
It wouldn’t have mattered much if she had, though. Black Widow couldn’t match the power of any of the Stones and her chances against Thanos with all of them were slim to none, just like everyone else. She has held one, as Wolverine gave her the Space Stone at one point, but she would eventually lose it.
8 Captain America’s Bravery Is No Match For The Infinity Stones
Captain America is Marvel’s most inspiring hero but even he is no match for the Infinity Stones. Cap was one of the heroes chosen to fight Thanos as a diversion in Infinity Gauntlet #4 and got one of the best moments in the entire book, staring down the Mad Titans and backtalking him before being killed by a casual backhand. Since then, he’s encountered the Stones several times.
Every time, Cap is pretty much a non-entity in the battle. He got to use them once to stop the first Incursion, but broke them while doing so. The guilt of helping the Illuminati potentially destroy other Earths led to the other members mindwiping him and expelling him from the group.
7 Black Panther Has Held The Infinity Gauntlet But He Can’t Match Its Power
Black Panther is one of the greatest heroes on the planet. He’s an amazing fighter, a cunning leader & strategist, and one of the smartest people in every room he walks into. Even with all of that, he’s nowhere near as powerful as an Infinity Stone. He has held the Infinity Gauntlet but it didn’t exactly help him.
During Secret Wars, Black Panther tried to use the Infinity Gauntlet to stop God Emperor Doom but Doom’s power was greater than the Gauntlet. Since then, Black Panther has stayed away from the Stones. As great as he is, he can’t match them without help.
6 Wolverine Can’t Handle The Stones’ Power
Wolverine wasn’t an Avenger when Thanos got the Infinity Gauntlet, but he was at the battle. He was able to sneak up on Thanos and stab him in the chest with his claws, looking eyes with the Mad Titan. His ferocity was unmatched on that day but it did no good, as Thanos transformed his bones to spongy rubber with the Gauntlet’s power.
He would later help out in the fight against the Infinity Gauntlet wielding Hood as an Avengers and got his hands on the Space Stone before giving it to Black Widow. Wolverine is tough but no match for the power of the Stones.
5 Iron Man’s Tech Is Good, But Not That Good
Iron Man’s armors are some of the most advanced weapons on Earth but they haven’t helped him against the Infinity Stones. Iron Man participated in the battle against Thanos in Infinity Gauntlet but didn’t even get killed by Thanos. Instead, he was killed by Terraxia, the woman Thanos created for himself, who tore his head off.
His attacks against the Mad Titan were completely ineffectual and the battle taught him to fear and respect the power of the Stones. He’d have further dealings with them as an Avenger and a member of the Illuminati but their power was always beyond him.
4 She-Hulk Is A Titan Of Strength But The Stones Have Spelled Her Doom In The Past
She-Hulk has been a difference maker on a lot of teams in the past but like many other Avengers, the Infinity Gauntlet proved to be her undoing. Surviving Thanos’s snap, She-Hulk was one of the heroes who went to confront him and lost her life in the battle. Thanos touched her and Namor, causing a fungal bloom to cover their skin which suffocated them.
Since then, she’s had no dealings with the Stones, which is good for her. While She-Hulk is extremely strong and durable, that pales in comparison to the power of the Infinity Stones, something she learned to her detriment.
3 Hyperion Is In The Top Tier Of Powerful Avengers But Is An Insect Compared To An Infinity Stone
Hyperion is one of the most powerful Avengers ever. An Eternal from an alternate Earth, there have been multiple versions of Hyperion running around the Multiverse for a long time now but one thing they all have in common is being superlatively powerful. His power helped the Avengers in their battles against the Builders, Thanos, and more.
As powerful as Hyperion is, his might pales in comparison to the power of the Infinity Stones. he may be one of the most powerful Avengers ever, but compared to the Stones, that’s like being the biggest ant in the anthill when the mower is approaching; it doesn’t matter in the slightest.
2 Captain Marvel’s Power Is Great But Not Greater Than An Infinity Stone
Captain Marvel has come in handy a lot lately. As one of the Avengers’ heaviest hitters, Captain Marvel is a major asset to the team in their battles. She’s strong, fast, and durable, and all of that combined with her ability to absorb energy makes her a versatile opponent. As good as all that is, it’s nothing compared to the power of the Infinity Stones.
Captain Marvel has been mostly absent from the Avengers when they’ve had to deal with the Infinity Stones. Her power is great but there would be nothing she could do against an Infinity Stone, no matter how hard she tried.
1 Thor’s Godly Might Can’t Come Close To An Infinity Stone
Thor is the God of Thunder and his might has helped the Avengers in many conflicts. He was also around for the battle against the Infinity Gauntlet— albeit the Eric Masterson version of Thor— and wasn’t killed by the Titan like most of his fellows. While this was a marked improvement compared to Earth’s other heroes, his power barely touched that of the Stones.
Later in his life, Thor would get his hands on the Power Stone in the throes of warrior madness and use it— but even then was slapped down by a Stone-less Thanos. While Thor is powerful, his might has never allowed him to defeat a being with an Infinity Stone.
