Players the world over are anxiously awaiting the latest release in the Metroid series, Metroid Dread. What looks to be a promising continuation of the Metroid series, Metroid Dread brings new mechanics and play styles to the table. With an emphasis on stealth, the game allows players to not only explore the strange planet of ZDR that Samus has found herself stranded on but encounter a new host of abilities as well as enemies.
The game’s graphics add an updated flair to the iconic Metroidvania platformer style, bringing the Metroid series into the present with its sleek design. From what we already know, his impressive game will be sure to grab hold of the attention of new and old players alike.
10 Metroid Dread Almost Didn’t Happen
Originally a project that was announced in 2005, Metroid Dread is a game that fans have been holding their breath for. It, however, faded into obscurity as nothing was heard for many years since. While players were still hopeful that the game would eventually happen, nothing was for certain.
It seems like the voices of those who wanted a new Metroid game were heard, however, as the game’s project was revived and given to game developer MercurySteam. MercurySteam is responsible for the 2017 remake, Metroid: Samus Returns, and looks to do the series justice in this brand new addition to the Metroid storyline.
9 It’s The First Sequal To The Main Story Line In Almost 20 Years
The last Metroid title in the main storyline was Metroid Fusion, which was released in 2002. Now, nearly 20 years later, Metroid Dread will pick up where Fusion left off. Metroid has brought players vast amounts of lore through the various games in the series over the years, and Metroid Dread looks to be no different. With such a large gap since the story was continued upon, the anticipation for Metroid Dread is high as fans await the next piece of Samus’ story.
8 Dread Brings A New Dimension To Metroid’s Gameplay
New to the Metroid series is the stealth component that inspires dread within the game. Metroid Dread is supposed to give the player a dreadful sense that they are being followed and watched as they explore the game’s environment. Set with a dark atmosphere, the game’s music helps evoke the feeling of apprehension. As the player wanders through each level, it seems as though the amount of dread rises with each obstacle and enemy that presents itself. Knowing that most of Samus’ attacks won’t be able to do anything against these new foes is certainly enough to create a sense of dread on this new planet.
7 The Fight Against The X Parasite Continues
Picking up where the story left off, the X parasites that were thought to be extinct show signs of life on Planet ZDR. When the Galactic Federation picks up on the transmission, they deploy a unit of robots whose job is to locate the parasites on ZDR. The X parasites represent a recurring enemy within the Metroid series with the ability to mimic their opponents. These stealthy aliens have the potential to carry endless power and seem to be unkillable as they return to the new game.
6 Samus Is Sent To Locate The Lost E.M.M.I.s
Sent to investigate the report of the X parasites living on the planet, a unit of 7 Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier (E.M.M.I.) robots are sent to investigate the possibility of the parasite’s return. Shortly upon landing on the planet’s surface, however, the unit of E.M.M.I.s disappear, leaving the Galactic Federation at a loss for what to do next.
Contacting Samus Aran for help with the investigation, Samus travels to ZDR to locate the missing E.M.M.I.s where they are confronted by a mysterious character new to the game. Each E.M.M.I in the game appear to have different abilities and represent different challenges that Samus will need to get past.
5 The Mysterious Planet ZDR Promises To Be Vast
Metroid Dread puts emphasis on exploring the planet’s environments in addition to the dread-filled experience. As the player unlocks new abilities for Samus to use, more of the world becomes easier to access and therefore open to exploration. This will allow players to access more content as they re-explore previous areas. With the various environments that ZDR gives players, there are vast amounts of content that they can unlock and discover. Players will also be tasked with figuring out who the inhabitants of planet ZDR are and why they are there.
4 Samus Has An Encounter With The Chozo
The Mysterious figure that ends up with Samus losing her suite’s upgrades is highly reminiscent of the Egyptian god Ra. While it’s unclear just who this character is, they are wearing a Chozo power suit and appear to be quite powerful. With hieroglyphic-like markings seen on a wall, there is some connection between the Chozo and the planet ZDR. Samus herself was taken under the wing of the Chozo and raised to be the warrior she grew up to be. Together, these cryptic signs hint as to what may happen in the story, working to build up the mystery behind the game.
3 Samus Loses Her Suit Upgrades
After Samus encounters the mysterious Chozo character, she wakes to learn that all of her upgrades in her suit have been stripped away. Knowing the challenges that Samus faces ahead in order to survive and get off of ZDR, Samus must make her way through the planet and tackle the rogue E.M.M.I.s in order to find an alternative path back to the planet’s surface. As the story unfolds, players will learn why the Galactic Federation lost control of the units and why she was attacked by the Chozo but left unharmed.
2 Metroid Dread Will Be The Last Game In This Arc
It’s unclear how the Metroid story will proceed after Metroid Dread. The game has been described as the last game in the story that the series started with. It’s still unclear if there will be future games that begin a new chapter of the series or if they will have little to do with future events. Hopefully, there will be more games that will continue Samus’ story and this awe-inspiring series that has been held dearly by fans for so long.
