The upcoming issue of X-Men: The Trial of Magneto explores the haunted mindscape of Max Eisenhardt, as two prominent mutant telepaths attempt to get a subconscious confession out of him.
Magneto is no stranger to psychic intrusions, having fought off numerous mental invasions over the years, — not only due to his specially made helmet, but also his innate superhuman resistance to telepathy. As a result, he notices Charles Xavier’s phantom presence almost immediately upon awakening within the astral plane.
Hope Summers is taken aback by Magneto’s mental fortitude, and clashes with Xavier over the ethics of what they are doing to him while the X-Men are away. The first mutant born after House of M, Hope represents the future of mutantkind. Xavier appears to be grooming her for his own ends, having overlooked more experienced and qualified psychics for the job, including Emma Frost and Jean Grey.
The Trial of Magneto puts the titular X-Man’s morality on trial after he is accused of murdering Wanda Maximoff, forcing the X-Men to question if their friend has truly changed, or is murder in his nature? Marvel Voices: Pride revealed a sensitive side to Magneto, flashing back to a previously unseen moment in X-Men history where he offered words of advice to a closeted Bobby Drake.
The original Brotherhood of Mutants recently reunited to grieve the Scarlet Witch, with Quicksilver coming close to killing Magneto. With even his former comrades turning their backs on him, the mutant antihero faces an uphill battle to prove his innocence. Magneto’s fellow Quiet Council members were hesitant to believe his motivations were pure when Magneto lobbied for Maximoff’s revival.
X-Men: The Trial of Magneto is written by Leah Williams, with art by Lucas Werneck, colors by Edgar Delgado and letters by Clayton Cowles. It is available from comic book stores and digital platforms on Sept. 15.
