My Hero Academia: 5 Most Overrated Students (& 5 Underrated)

Fans can’t help but compare characters in My Hero Academia, and even the show constantly ranks the students in comparison with one another. However, each Quirk has its unique strengths and weaknesses that make winning circumstantial at times. Many of the tournaments and drills that take place in the show fail to account for this.

While some characters are obviously favorited to become Pro Heroes and beat out others, there are some whose practical use in real-life rescue operations is overlooked. There are many MHA characters who shouldn’t be counted out.

10 Overrated: Lemillion’s Quirk Has So Many Uses

Lemillion hits overhaul

Mirio Togata, or Lemillion, can pass through any object, making him virtually untouchable. There are only two serious weaknesses for this Quirk that fans of the anime are familiar with. The first is that Lemillion can get stuck in objects, but he trained diligently so this would never happen. This makes him virtually unbeatable in normal circumstances.

The second is that he must become solid to protect others sometimes, and this happens in the episode where he is hit by a Quirk-destroying bullet to save Eri.

9 Underrated: So Does Uravity’s Underutilized Quirk

Ochako in UA uniform

While Ochaco Uraraka is not as tricky to hit as Lemillion, her zero-gravity Quirk has a variety of practical uses. Uraraka excelled in the U.A. Entrance Exam due to her ability to make anything she touches lose its gravitational mass.

When saving civilians from debris and rubble from fallen buildings, natural disasters, or just general calamity, this Quirk is just as useful as Lemillion’s. Though the hand-to-hand combat potential is less clear, there are obvious ways Uraraka could make Pro Hero status and save countless lives in the process.

8 Overrated: Hado’s Power Is Immense

Hado plays villain in drill

Hado’s Wave Motion packs a huge punch, but it has two big drawbacks. One is its slow speed, making it easier to dodge. The other drawback is its drain on her stamina, giving it a clear limit regarding the length of time it can be used.

However, Hado is considered part of the top three in the school, so her power is tried and true. Still, some of the younger students have yet to fully develop and master their Quirks, so she is at the top for now, but that is subject to change.

7 Underrated: But Kaminari’s Electricity Is Faster

Kaminari electricity in hand

Kaminari’s power does not have the same speed issue that Hado’s does, nor does it drain his vitality. Instead, it drains his brainpower, which can lead to some pretty serious complications mid-fight. If Kaminari can find a way to circumnavigate or mitigate this issue, he stands a chance of being more powerful than Hado.

His blasts are faster and more powerful. So, all he has to do is train his brain and work on his aim and he could stand a chance.

6 Overrated: Deku’s Quirk Lends Him Some Serious Power & Strength

Midoriya smiles confidently surrounded by green electricity

Deku posses the One for All Quirk, a Quirk built up by the series to be the most powerful one around. To illustrate this, they include All Might, the long-reigning number one Pro Hero. Though the Quirk takes a toll on Deku’s body, there are few situations he cannot overcome using this Quirk, and in typical shonen anime fashion, he can hit hard and come back stronger after each failure.

As the protagonist of the story, there was almost no way he would not be overrated, and fans are not too mad about that because he is such a likable character.

5 Underrated: Mina’s Slick Abilities Should Give Her More Wins

Mina Ashido stretches

While Deku can overcome almost any obstacle with his Quirk, the cheery and bubbly Mina Ashido’s Quirk should be able to overcome more. With the ability to create and control acid and its various properties, Mina’s ability should come in more handy, especially when fighting physical-based opponents.

Fans can see why blasts of energy, such as Kaminari’s or Hado’s, could break through Mina’s defenses, but it is a shame that Mina has not been given enough limelight to prove how useful her caustic acid can be.

4 Overrated: Suneater’s Abilities Are Diverse, Depending On His Diet

Suneater prepares to fight

Suneater’s odd Quirk, Manifest, allows him to morph parts of his body into elements resembling things he has previously eaten. The impact of his ability directly correlates with the amount of each specific food he eats. So, there are some obvious limitations to his ability, and there is a certain level of pre-planning that must be done daily.

Though he is part of the big three at U.A., there are students with the potential to surpass him who haven’t fully realized their potential yet.

3 Underrated: Momo’s Even More Diversifiable Power Should Lend Her More Credit

Momo wears regular clothes

One character who has the potential to outmatch Suneater is Momo Yaoyorozu. At the start of the school year, she was expected to be one of the top students, as her ability has the potential to be incredibly useful and versatile.

However, as the show progresses, Momo does not shine as much as fans might have expected. There is little reason for this, as her ability to create things at will rivals that of Suneater and does not require the same level of prefight preparation.

2 Overrated: Todoroki’s Fire & Ice Powers Are Formidable

It is beyond doubt that Shoto Todoroki is one of the most capable heroes, and his ability is both versatile and powerful. The more he pushes the boundaries of his skills and gets in touch with his firepower, the more he ensures himself a spot at the top.

His character definitely falls into the overpowered side of the spectrum, though, making him overrated in comparison, especially since the drawbacks of his Quirk are not as serious or difficult to overcome as Kaminari’s or even Deku’s.

1 Underrated: Neito Monoma’s Copy Should Be Just As Tricky

Monoma copies Eri's quirk

If Todoroki’s skills are versatile, Neito Monoma’s Copy Quirk should be even more so, however it is vastly underutilized. He could go into any fight having copied the Quirk of another extremely powerful hero, and in a team setting, he would be a trump card.

If he found the villains’ Quirk to be more useful, he could copy that and provide a serious obstacle. While Copy would require a lot of forethought and pre-planning, it could prove a great help both in a support role and a hero role.
