News of the Director’s Edition release comes just days after it was revealed that Paramount+ had lost the majority of the 13 Star Trek films it previously hosted. As of June, Paramount+ users could stream the six original Star Trek films, as well as the four Star Trek: The Next Generation films. Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams’ third Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Beyond, was added in July and the second Abrams film, Star Trek: Into the Darkness, became available on the platform in July.
While Paramount+ has been marketed as the “home to all your Star Trek needs,” all of the Star Trek films outside of Abrams’ franchise are now gone, with nine of them now streaming on AMC+. Paramount+ is still the hub, however, for all of the Star Trek television series, including Paramount+ Originals like Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard and the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Paramount+ is also currently filming a new Star Trek series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. That series will find Anson Mount and Ethan Peck reprising their Star Trek: Discovery roles as Captain Christopher Pike and Spock, respectively. The series will also star Rebecca Romijn as Number One.
Directed by Robert Wise, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released in 1979 and found William Shatner’s Admiral James T. Kirk resuming command of the starship Enterprise and being tasked by Starfleet Command with intercepting a mysterious cloud entity. The film marked the first in the Star Trek film franchise and starred the cast of the original television series, which included Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Nichelle Nichols as Uhura and George Take as Hikaru Sulu.
Paramount+ first announced the Deluxe Edition was coming back in July, saying at the time, “The restoration will be undertaken by producer David C. Fein, restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, all of whom worked previously with director Robert Wise. The film will be prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The restoration is expected to take 6-8 months and will launch with an exclusive window on Paramount+.”
Robert Wise’s Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture will premiere on Paramount+ in 2022.
