WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, now in theaters.
In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again explores the multiverse, with the idea being that the mystical city of Ta Lo exists in a different dimension. And as more is revealed learn about Ta Lo as it’s being defended from Shang-Chi’s mad father, Wenwu, it becomes clear that the MCU could use it to redeem its most hated superhero: Iron Fist.
Now, while fans were heartbroken Netflix cancelled its Marvel TV shows, it’s safe to say people didn’t feel bad for Finn Jones’ Danny Rand. While the second season and his stint with the Defenders redeemed him in some way, the troubles of his first season left a bad taste in many fans’ mouths.
However, one move that was praised from the show was giving the fist to Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing. It was a heartbreaking cliffhanger because many felt she earned the right to be the Chosen One, but she was never going to get the chance to use it. However, given what Shang-Chi brings to the MCU, Colleen has a way back in via the story of Ta Lo. The hidden village exists in a different reality, meaning it could be that the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven from Iron Fist are an extension of it. After all, they have so many similarities, from warriors training to protect their realm to dragons.
Having Colleen show up in Ta Lo would give her a great mentor in Nan, allowing her to explore weapons, the concept of chi and the energy of nature in a way she never could on Netflix. It would also fit with the theme in Shang-Chi that anyone can be a warrior, as shown when Katy hit the critical shot on the Dweller-in-Darkness and Xialing took control of the Ten Rings after he father died.
Speaking of Xialing, she and Collen crossing paths would make for great storytelling, with it being possible that the new leader of the Ten Rings wants Colleen and other Immortal Weapons to join her movement. This could even give rise to Shang-Chi growing stronger to see if he could go toe-to-toe with some of the MCU’s other powerful martial artists.
Ultimately, Colleen’s personality, not to mention her fighting prowess, fits the Shang-Chi tapestry well and would allow her to shine, with Danny serving more as a background character. He can be explored again someday, but the more intriguing scenario is to have Collen return and join up with the newest corner of the ever-growing MCU.
To see how Ta Lo potentially sets up Iron Fist’s redemption, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
