Star Trek: Picard Season 2’s Latest News, Trailers and Story Details So Far

In 2020, one of Star Trek‘s most iconic characters returned to the franchise: Jean-Luc Picard. Titled Picard, the Paramount+ series picked up decades after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation and followed the iconic captain as he helped Soji, the daughter of Data, find a planet filled with synthetic life — and despite such lifeforms having been banned following an attack on Mars. However, things were made complicated by Picard having stepped away from Starfleet after the organization’s choice not to save the Romulans from destruction.

With Picard set to return for a second season, here’s what we know about the series’ next outing, so far.

What Is the Story Going into Picard Season 2?

At the end of Picard Season 1, the titular captain prevented the Zhat Vash — a secretive group of Romulan operatives — from wiping out a planet filled with synthetic life. Simultaneously, he convinced Soji not to release a potential apocalypse onto the universe that would be perpetrated by a powerful synthetic force summoned via a beacon. However, Picard collapsed soon afterward, succumbing to the terminal illness that plagued him all season.

In a twist ending, though, Picard’s consciousness was moved into a golem, thus giving him a second chance at life. And not only did Picard survive, but the Federation even lifted its ban on synthetic life as a result of his efforts. So as Season 1 ended, a victorious Picard set out aboard the La Sirena with Soji, Cristobal Rios, Raffaela “Raffi” Musiker, Agnes Jurati, Elnor and Seven of Nine, all of whom will return for Season 2.

There’s no official plot synopsis for Picard Season 2 at this time. However, footage from the series has made clear that Q will return to once again test humanity and Picard. That appearsPi to entail the possibility to undo or change various historical events. Whoopi Goldberg will also return to the Star Trek universe as Guinan, whom she played in The Next Generation, and it seems likely she’ll once again come into conflict with Q. Additionally, one scene from the trailer teases Seven of Nine losing her Borg implants, which could have major ramifications for the character.

A second, full-length trailer debuted Sept. 9, 2021, as part of the Star Trek Day celebration, outlining a time-travel plot that sends Picard and his crew back in time to the 21st century, to foil Q’s scheme and to save the future of Earth and the Federation.
