Every Major Streaming Service & What Each Offers Comic Fans | CBR

With so many video streaming services available, it is getting more difficult to keep track of what show or movie is available to stream on what platform. With so many different subscriptions adding up, many fans have to resort to canceling once a season is over and re-subscribing when it comes back.

While most streaming platforms offer something based on comic books, some like Discovery+ don’t feature any comic book properties at all. By now, most comic book fans know what streaming services they need to watch their favorite comic-based show, but they may be curious about what is available on other platforms. Of course, the content available on any given streaming is constantly changing, so other than originals specifically created for a service, the movies and shows mentioned in this article can leave or switch services at any time.

7 Peacock Currently Has A Few Obscure Comic Book Adaptions

Hellboy In His Room

NBC’s Peacock is a newer and smaller streaming service than some of the other streaming giants, though it does have some big draws for subscribers like The Office. However, for comic book fans, there isn’t much. There is the 2004 Hellboy movie and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army, along with the poorly received 2019 reboot.

In addition, there are a few Marvel movies as well, though none from the modern MCU. There is Marvel’s 1998 Blade starring Wesley Snipes that still has a cult following. If that isn’t weird enough for viewers, Peacock also has Howard the Duck available to stream.

6 Paramount+ Has A Lot Of Ninja Turtles But Not Much Else Comic-Related

Paramount+ brings together Paramount-owned media like CBS, MTV, and Nickelodeon. The streaming service is great for families and fans of classic Nicktoons from the ’90s, as well as new offerings like the Rugrats and iCarly reboots. For comic book fans, there is less here due to Paramount not owning any of the rights to major comic book properties like Warner Bros. and Disney do.

However, that doesn’t mean there is nothing on Paramount+ for comic fans either. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles technically started out as a comic book, and the various movies and TV shows from that franchise are streaming on Paramount+. As of this writing, Marvel’s The Avengers is streaming on the platform as a result of pre-existing distribution deals.

5 Hulu Has Several Marvel & DC Shows, Including The Recent M.O.D.O.K. Series

With Disney controlling the majority of Hulu, the streaming service at one time appeared to be an essential subscription for Marvel fans. The platform featured shows that were supposed to tie in with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and The Runaways. That all changed with the arrival of Disney+ and the cancelation of those shows that now exist outside of the main canon, though they are still available to stream.

It remains to be seen if Hulu will be a place for Marvel-related content that is too adult for Disney+ but for now, the only show that has been added since Disney+ launched is the non-canon M.O.D.O.K. animated series. In addition, Hulu also has Fox’s Marvel shows like The Gifted and Legion. Hulu even has a few shows from DC available, like Teen Titans Go and Smallville.

4 Prime Video Has The Best Comic Book Content That Isn’t Marvel Or DC

Though it is often thought of as just an extra that comes with signing up for Amazon Prime, Amazon’s Prime Video is a solid streaming service. The platform features a variety of shows and movies that may or may not be available on other streaming services and some additional original content.

For comic book fans, the biggest draw to Prime Video would be the popular The Boys original series that satirizes modern superheroes. The Boys has proven so popular that it has produced a spin-off that will also premiere on Prime Video in the future. In addition, Prime Video also offers the Invincible animated series and the short-lived live-action series, The Tick.

3 Netflix’s Marvel Shows Are Still Great & Worth Re-Watching

Despite growing competition, Netflix is still the largest streaming service around, and it makes sense that they would have something to offer everyone, including comic book fans. Though Netflix doesn’t have any currently running Marvel series, it is still the only place to watch shows from Marvel’s original journey into streaming like Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

For DC fans, many of the CW’s Arrowverse shows were negotiated to stream on Netflix before they eventually move to HBO Max, making it the best place to catch up on previous seasons of shows like Arrow and The Flash. Netflix also has comic-based shows available to stream that aren’t Marvel or DC properties like The Walking Dead and Riverdale.

2 HBO Max Has Everything DC — Just Not All At Once

With HBO Max taking over most DC shows from DC Universe, HBO Max is an essential streaming service for DC fans. As most fans know by now, HBO Max has had same-day releases of major DC movies like Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad. Far from focusing only on movies, HBO Max is the only place to watch new episodes of DC’s streaming-only titles like Titans and Harley Quinn.

In addition, HBO Max has CW titles that Netflix didn’t receive, like Batwoman and Stargirl, as well as animated classics like Teen Titans and Batman: The Animated Series. One downside of HBO Max is that it strangely rotates its library of available content. So far, fans have not been able to watch every DCEU movie all at once on HBO Max.

1 Disney+ Is Essential For Marvel Fans

Black Widow-MCU-Header

Just like HBO Max is a must-have for DC fans, Disney+ is essential for Marvel fans interested in keeping up with shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond MCU shows, Disney+ still features most all Marvel TV shows and movies released over the years. This includes nostalgic classics like the Spider-Man animated series and the X-Men animated series from the ’90s. In addition, Marvel properties from outside the MCU like Fox’s X-Men movies are available along with series that aired on network television, like Agent Carter.

Though it doesn’t feature rotating content like HBO Max, there are still some movies and series that aren’t available for one reason or another. The Spider-Man films co-produced by Sony are currently absent, though it appears they will be available in the future. The nearly complete library, along with the promise of it one day being completed, is a big draw for Marvel fans. However, it remains to be seen if Disney will work out a deal with Universal to bring the often forgotten The Incredible Hulk to the platform.
