Netflix just released the trailer for one of its biggest movies of the year. Red Notice, which is set to premiere on November 12, looks much more like a Hollywood movie than many niche-style Netflix films. Supported by its stellar cast and an ultra-high budget, Red Notice could be the best thing to hit Netflix since Stranger Things.
Red Notice features Dwayne Johnson, Gal Godot and Ryan Reynolds in a comedic crime thriller. The cast alone warrants attention for the film, but its large budget is also worth noting. After acquiring the rights to the film from Universal Pictures, Netflix dropped between $160-$200 million on the original film. Between the cast and the budget, it’s going to be worth watching, so the question is: What is it about?
Unless someone is familiar with international crime, the title of the film doesn’t give a lot of hits about the movie’s subject matter. However, it’s actually a great title. A Red Notice is something issued by Interpol – a crime fighting organization in Paris that coordinates investigations regarding international crimes. It’s a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition. Basically, it’s a worldwide most-wanted list.
A quick search for the film reveals that its logline does a good job of explaining its title: “An Interpol-issued Red Notice is a global alert to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted. But when a daring heist brings together the FBI’s top profiler (Johnson) and two rival criminals (Gadot, Reynolds), there’s no telling what will happen.”
And based on the trailer, a lot does happen. John Hartley (Johnson) is an FBI agent and a master tracker. He has been watching Sarah Black (Gadot) for a number of heists over her art thieving career, and now that Interpol has issued its Red Notice, Hartley tries to make his move and arrest her. However, that doesn’t go well for Hartley, especially when Black makes a fool out of him and Bolan Booth (Reynolds) – who has decided to make the same heist as Black – and frames both of them for the robbery.
The trailer also seems to show that Hartley and Booth will form some kind of a loose alliance to finally get back at Black for getting the better of them and sending them to jail. The only question is whether they will succeed or whether Black will have her way in the world of crime.
