Spider-Man: No Way Home IMAX Trailer Debunks Charlie Cox Appearance

Since the release of the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, fans have been speculating that Charlie Cox will be returning in one scene as Matt Murdock from the canceled Daredevil Netflix series. Now that the trailer is playing IMAX theaters, that theory has been safely debunked.

The IMAX version of the trailer has made its way online, with viewers noting that the larger aspect ratio allows more from the scene in question to come into view: the scene in which a man in a white shirt slaps a folder on the table in front of a handcuffed Peter Parker. In the IMAX trailer, his face is visible and it is definitely not that of Cox.

The figure appears once before in the trailer, silhouetted. The figure’s resemblance to Cox fuelled theories that Spider-Man: No Way Home would bring Netflix’s Daredevil back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shortly after the release of the trailer, social media was alight with fans posting screenshots from Daredevil and from the No Way Home trailer, trying to compare details and determine whether or not it was in fact Matt Murdock they had just seen.

Actor Charlie Cox himself, in a recent interview, discussed the topic and attempted to debunk the theory himself, telling viewers, “I can assure you, those are not my forearms.” As with many MCU-related matters, this has evidently done little to put the theory down. Some have interpreted this to simply mean that Cox will not appear in that police interrogation scene, but may appear elsewhere in the upcoming film.

It’s worth noting that although there has been an uptick in conversation about Charlie Cox’s potential appearance in No Way Home since the trailer, rumors about Daredevil and Spider-Man have been circulating since filming on No Way Home began. There were reports that Cox had signed a deal with Marvel Studios to return as Daredevil in 2020, then later in January, it was reported that Cox had even completed filming.

Netflix’s Daredevil introduced Cox as the titular Man Without Fear. While the series did hint at its relationship to Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe, the MCU never acknowledged the characters or events of the show — or virtually all other series prior to the Disney+ projects. After three seasons, Daredevil was canceled in 2018, along with similar shows such as Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. The decision to cancel evidently came as a surprise to even executives and led to a call from fans for Marvel Studios to save the character.
