Haikyuu!!: 5 Sports Hinata Should Play (& 5 He Shouldn’t) | CBR

Fans have loved watching Shoyo Hinata in Haikyuu!! as he strives to become a volleyball champion. His passion for volleyball started the first time he saw the Tiny Giant playing on TV. What would have happened if he hadn’t seen that incredible game?

Hinata has played other sports casually with his friends. But with the multitude of sports out there, what other sports could Hinata have excelled at? Hinata definitely has a strong athletic foundation, but with so many skills and abilities needed for each individual sport, it’s only realistic that he would have a great chance of success at some and not perform well in others.

10 Should: Tennis Suits Hinata’s Strengths

Tennis Racquets and balls

Tennis probably has the closest overlap with volleyball in terms of some of Hinata’s best skills. It’s another sport where he can use his lightness on his feet and speed in small courts to his advantage.

Plus, Hinata has the ability to see through his opponent’s defenses to determine the best spot to send the ball. This would be a very useful skill on a tennis court as well. The ability to be able to visualize the best place to send the ball and then land it there would make him a formidable opponent in tennis, just like in volleyball.

9 Should Not: Shot Put Doesn’t Use Hinata’s Best Skills

Shot Put

One of Hinata’s strongest abilities is his ability to communicate on the field, which is just about useless in any solo event. While Hinata has strong athleticism, footwork, and is likely strong overall, it’s unlikely he has the muscles needed for this event.

This event requires a lot of muscle to be put into the throw, which Hinata does not have. And while he is good at exercising for volleyball and dedicated to training himself on the court, it’s unclear how he would handle just strength training in a gym.

8 Should: Hinata Is Already Cycling Daily

Cycling

It’s no secret that Hinata bikes a lot. He frequently uses his bike as his primary means of transportation to get around his town. In fact, he’s regularly shown biking up a mountain, so it’s likely he’s pretty well-built for cycling.

Hinata is competitive enough to constantly push himself to do better, regardless of what’s happening around him. It’s likely he would excel at a sport where he’s both competing against his own times and others, as he’s been shown to have a constant desire to improve himself.

7 Should Not: Hinata Isn’t Built For Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey Players

Ice hockey is a sport that would put Hinata at a severe disadvantage compared to his opponents. This sport typically expects stronger, larger players, as it is an extremely physical sport that has players physically tackling each other. With his smaller stature, Hinata is likely to get easily pummeled anytime he is anywhere near the puck.

While this is a sport he may enjoy playing, it’s unlikely he would be able to hold his own or offer much in the way of defense unless he significantly bulks up.

6 Should: Ultimate Frisbee Uses Hinata’s Instincts Well

Ultimate Frisbee Silhouette

Hinata’s speed on his feet and general athleticism would make him great at ultimate frisbee. His intelligence on the field and ability to see weaknesses in defense would help him excel as the handler, controlling where the disc goes and the plays they use.

Even outside of the handler position, his ability to leap high in the air would help him catch the disc while avoiding the defense. Plus, his quick speed would help him a lot with faking out his opponents and moving the disc further up the field.

5 Should Not: Golf Would Lose Hinata’s Attention

Golf

The main reason Hinata would not do well at golf is that it’s unlikely to be able to hold his attention. While his sharp instincts may be useful for landing the ball perfectly wherever he wants it, it’s still overall a slower-paced sport.

To say Hinata is a constant ball of energy is an understatement. He loves being able to move around and is constantly dodging and racing across the court. While he may be good at golf technically, it’s unlikely that he would enjoy it and actually want to play it due to the slow nature of the game.

4 Should: Hinata Would Break Records As A High Jumper

High Jump Silhouette

Hinata’s competitive drive and incredible jump would definitely aid him in the high jump event of a track and field competition. This event has participants competing to see how high they can jump over a horizontal bar. Fans have already seen Hinata’s impressive leaps, so it’s no surprise that he would likely excel at this event.

The way he approaches his leaps in volleyball is even similar to the typical ten-step approach used by high jumpers. Plus, it’s another sport where his competitive drive would be useful as he competes both against other participants and his own personal records.

3 Should Not: Cross Country Doesn’t Work In Hinata’s Favor

Cross Country Running

While Hinata has been on long runs with his team, it’s not known how he would fare running long distances competitively. His general competitiveness would work to his advantage. However, if he isn’t a strong distance runner, that would not help him enough.

In addition, even though he is competitive, it’s clear that Hinata is easily distracted. If he’s not 100% focused on his goal in a cross country race, it’s likely that his concentration and pace would slip. Plus, he has already gotten lost on a long run with his team before, making it possible that that could happen in a competitive event as well.

2  Should: Baseball Uses All Of Hinata’s Skills

Baseball glove and ball

Baseball is a great team sport that would utilize Hinata’s already proven skills. For example, he excels at communicating with the rest of his team while in the middle of play. Also, his instinct to immediately process the best place to send the ball when it lands in his mitt would benefit any baseball team.

Plus, his overall strong athleticism would only make him a better player, like his speed and stamina. His impressive jump height would be a strong asset as well, especially if he’s positioned in the outfield.

1 Should Not: Hinata’s Height Would Make Basketball A Challenge

Basketball

While Hinata does play basketball with his friends, it’s unlikely he would excel at it competitively. Despite his ability to jump high, his height disadvantage would ultimately make it extremely difficult for him.

In volleyball, he can compensate for his height by choosing the best moments to jump to block opponents. In basketball, however, his competitors would almost always have the advantage. It would be difficult for Hinata to navigate the field well if he was up against a court of players significantly taller than him.
