When Marvel Studios first announced development on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2018, Simu Liu sent an errant public tweet to the studio, leading to speculation that this put him on Marvel’s radar. However, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, this tweet wasn’t what landed Liu the superhero role.
During a press conference attended by CBR, the topic of Liu’s Tweet came up, with Liu visibly interested to hear Feige’s comments on the matter. However, according to Feige, Liu’s casting came from the conventional audition and meeting process. “Simu, it was not your tweeting,” Feige confirmed. “It was your acting ability, your constant professionalism and then multiple reads and meetings that you did that got you the job.”
Liu tweeted Marvel Studios on Dec. 3, 2018 after screenwriter David Callaham was officially hired to write the screenplay for Shang-Chi. Months later, Liu began testing for the role, before being cast in July 2019, seven months after publicly reaching out. While Liu’s tweet may not have directly played a role in his casting, the actor appears to have manifested his own Marvel Cinematic Universe destiny.
Directed and co-written by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
