All Might, the Symbol of Peace, is the axis around which the world of My Hero Academia rotates. His strong presence and appearance make people feel safe. But All Might is more than a symbol. As Toshinori Yagi, he has friends and loved ones. More recently, he’s taken Izuku Midoriya under his wing, but he’s been close to others in the past.
One of the most eloquent examples is Mirai Sasaki, known as the Pro Hero Sir Nighteye. An important character in the Shie Hassaikai Arc, he is killed in the final battle with Overhaul. Over the course of his career, Sir Nighteye has had his own fair share of failures. He has both strengths and weaknesses, but he’s still earned the respect of fans and fellow heroes alike.
10 STRENGTH: Foresight Allows Him To See The Future
Mirai’s Quirk is unique, allowing him to see the future. For it to work, he must first touch his target and then make eye contact with them. Foresight allows Mirai to see up to years into the future, although the further he goes, the blurrier the things become. Even so, it’s incredibly useful in investigative work, giving heroes an invaluable advantage over villains. He also incorporates it into his fighting style on the field, and he is able to anticipate anyone’s moves, as it is shown in the Shie Hassaikai raid, or even in his brief fight with Izuku.
9 WEAKNESS: His Mental Quirk May Have Been Seen As Unsuitable For Heroism
Despite the tremendous potential of Foresight, the fact remains that Sir Nighteye has a mental Quirk. In MHA, society is severely skewed in favor of flashy Quirks, such as One for All, Explosion, or Hot and Cold.
Subtler ones like Sir Nighteye’s have been seen as less powerful. His situation is not unlike that of Pro Hero Eraserhead, whose Quirk Erasure is less useful in group fights. Similarly, student Hitoshi Shinso is unable to pass the hero entrance exam due to his Brainwashing mental Quirk. While Mirai is not the type of person to let that kind of setback get in his way, it must have troubled him in his youth.
8 STRENGTH: He Is Deceptively Strong, Agile, & Possesses Great Combat Skills
Despite being primarily an intelligence-oriented hero, Sir Nighteye is a very capable fighter. Like Eraserhead, he compensates for not having a purely battle-oriented Quirk with intense physical training. His weapon of choice consists of heavy hyper-density seals, which he wields to great effect, both in hand-to-hand combat and as ranged projectiles. This is particularly remarkable, as the seals each weigh 11 pounds.
7 WEAKNESS: He Can Only Activate His Quirk Once Per Day
Between his powerful mental Quirk and his extreme physical training, Sir Nighteye may have had the potential of being a top-ranking Pro Hero. Unfortunately, Foresight comes with a serious limitation. He can only activate it once every 24 hours, and it only stays active for one hour. He tends to use it only when he absolutely has to, as a trump card, instead of relying on it all the time, but it’s still a regrettable weakness.
6 STRENGTH: He Has Great Teaching Abilities & Is An Amazing Mentor For Mirio
Mirio Togata’s Quirk, Permeation, is originally seen by many as weak. He embarrasses himself at his first Sports Tournament due to his inability to keep his clothes on. But he doesn’t give up, and Sir Nighteye sees Mirio has the potential of becoming a great hero.
He takes Mirio under his wing, and by the time Mirio is a third-year, he becomes the strongest student in U.A. Without Sir Nighteye’s teaching skills, Lemillion wouldn’t have become the bright and brilliant hero fans know and love. He certainly wouldn’t have stood a chance against Overhaul.
5 WEAKNESS: His Quirk Makes Him Arrogant & Dismissive Of Everyone Else’s Choices
Sir Nighteye’s involvement in Mirio’s education isn’t completely selfless, as Mirai believes Mirio would be a great successor for One for All. He’s not wrong, but in the end, the decision isn’t up to him, and it is still All Might who must find the best inheritor for his Quirk. Mirai doesn’t react well to All Might’s choice, and he is very dismissive of Izuku when the young hero first comes to his agency.
It’s not a pleasant experience for Izuku, who’s already experienced so much discrimination from being Quirkless. But Sir Nighteye realizes he’s wrong after the battle with Overhaul. Before he dies, he understands Deku is indeed the hero of the future. He also apologizes to Mirio for having perceived him as a possible vessel for One for All, although by then, his original reasons no longer matter. He started to genuinely care about his intern long ago.
4 STRENGTH: He Chooses To Look Unassuming & Takes Opponents By Surprise
Because hero society is oriented so much toward flashiness, the costume of a hero can be very important. Strikingly, Sir Nighteye chooses to wear a simple suit, masquerading as a stereotypical Japanese businessman. This works very well, as his unassuming exterior makes opponents think he is harmless. That couldn’t be more false. Of course, this also means that he’s somewhat underrated as a Pro Hero, but he doesn’t seem to mind.
3 WEAKNESS: He Can Be Fearful Of His Own Quirk
Many Quirks in MHA have downsides. From visible mutations that cause ostracization to powerful emitter Quirks that damage their user, superpowers aren’t always a blessing. Sir Nighteye’s Foresight doesn’t seem to have huge downsides, not like other Quirks displayed in the anime. Even so, the hero has been noted to fear his own Quirk. He believes the future he sees is immutable, and once he sees someone’s death, it is set in stone. It is a crippling weakness that fails to take into account alternate possibilities and the effects other Quirks may have on his own.
He is proven wrong when Eri and Deku defy all odds during the battle with Overhaul. It is only then that he understands the future isn’t written in stone. When he dies, he does so with a smile on his face, after seeing through his Quirk that Lemillion will be a great hero.
2 STRENGTH: He Is Incredibly Intelligent & Loyal To All Might
One of Sir Nighteye’s greatest qualities is his intelligence. His genius intellect is what makes his agency so essential in the fight against the Shie Hassaikai. He is also very loyal to All Might, whom he respects greatly. He is All Might’s sidekick for five years, and throughout this time, his support makes the job of the Symbol of Peace much easier. He’s also a bit of an All Might fanboy and collects memorabilia of his idol. It is because of this that he and Izuku finally reach a compromise. During their fight, Izuku manages to avoid damaging the merchandise, despite the highly destructive abilities of One for All.
1 WEAKNESS: His Blind Belief In His Quirk Makes Him Have A Fallout With All Might
All Might’s first battle with All for One drastically challenges Mirai’s view of the world. In desperation to save his friend and idol, Mirai looks into All Might’s future. He sees Toshinori dying a horrible death and tries to convince him to retire. When All Might refuses, they have a fallout. It’s understandable that Mirai would feel the need to distance himself from Toshinori if he considered Toshinori’s decisions self-destructive, and his concerns aren’t unwarranted. He also doesn’t realize his Quirk can be wrong until much later. Still, his views are heavily influenced by his Foresight, and they don’t take into account Toshinori’s feelings or the fact that most prophecies can be self-fulfilling.
