Firaxis Games dropped the first trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns, showing off the game’s tactical turn-based combat.
The gameplay trailer provides fans with a little more context on both Midnight Sun‘s story and gameplay. Resurrected to fight back against their mother, the Hunter is shown exploring the team’s home base of operations while talking to several key characters. Dialogue options play a key role in conversations, with the Hunter able to choose from a variety of responses based on either their dark or light side influences.
Beyond that, combat was also highlighted. In turn-based battles, it seems like the members of the Midnight Suns will have a host of unique abilities tied to cards. These cards can be spent to perform unique actions; from massive area-of-effect damage moves to team buffs and enemy debuffs. Players will be able to use the environment to their advantage as enemies can be knocked into deadly objects and hazards. Firaxis Games also revealed a handful of what appears to be ultimate moves; incredibly powerful abilities that will no doubt devastate enemies.
Speaking on the game’s combat system, Jake Solomon, creative director on Marvel’s Midnight Suns, said that the team at Firaxis Games had to design entirely new mechanics to create the ultimate superhero experience. “As a superhero, you need to feel like the most powerful character on the board… we still need to provide the players with a challenge, but the challenge now is that there are a lot of enemies. In XCOM you’re terrified that you’re about to die half the time, but here your enemies are terrified that they’re about to die half the time,” said Solomon.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is an adaption of the cult classic 90’s comic book Rise of the Midnight Sons. As the Hunter, an original character created specifically for the game, players will need to defend the world against Lilith, Mother of Demons. To do so, they’ll need to destroy here seemingly endless army of underworld creatures all while forging unique bonds with their fellow superheroes.
Midnight Suns boasts a roster of all-star characters from all corners of the Marvel universe. Players will need to figure out how to work alongside heavy-hitting “Big Leaguers” like Captain America, Iron-Man and Captain Marvel while also placating the darker, supernatural fights like Nico Minoru, Ghost Rider, Magik, Blade and Doctor Strange. The game will feature twelve Marvel characters in total; the last three members of the Midnight Suns will be revealed in the near future.
Relationships will play a key part in Marvel’s Midnight Sun. In between combat, players will return to The Abbey to regroup and catch up with their teammates. This downtime can be spent hanging out with the characters, forging strong bonds and friendships. The closer the Hunter grows to a character, the more effective they will be in combat.
Marvel fans won’t need to wait too long to send Lilith’s army back down to Hell. Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and Google Stadia in March 2022.
