A study found The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Andrew Garfield was the favorite Spider-Man actor among Twitter users, beating out Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy star Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland, who plays the web-slinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The results, provided by SlotsOnlineCanada, revealed that Garfield has seen a bigger influx of positive Tweets over the past year than Maguire and Holland, amidst rumors the trio will share the screen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man films, ranked as Twitter’s favorite female Spider-Man actor by the same metrics, which involved searching “[Actor Name] Spider-Man” and assigning a positive or negative score to each term.
“We wanted to look into the concept of potential cast reunions or team-ups, as it’s always a gamble as to whether or not fans want to see their favourite characters return or if they’d prefer them to have ended on a high,” said Gayle Mitchell, Senior Editor at SlotsOnlineCanada, commenting on the results.
Garfield took over the role of the live-action Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 2010 after Sony elected to pass on making Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 in favor of rebooting the series with a new cast and creative team. The first Amazing Spider-Man movie, released in 2012, garnered mostly positive reviews, with Garfield and Stone praised for their performances and onscreen chemistry as Peter and Gwen. However, its sequel earned a mixed to negative reception when it arrived in 2014, with critics berating The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for being overstuffed while once again praising its leads for keeping the whole thing afloat with their acting.
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s lower-than-desire turnout at the box office, Sony cancelled its plans to continue the series with more sequels and spinoffs in favor of striking a deal with Marvel Studios to bring the wall-crawler into the MCU. But despite Holland’s popularity as the MCU’s Spidey, fans of Garfield’s take on Peter Parker have since expressed their hope that the actor would get another shot at playing the superhero after his original run was cut short. This may explain the positive Twitter response to a report from December 2020, claiming Garfield had closed a deal to reprise Peter Parker in No Way Home.
Although Garfield initially denied denied the rumor, he later waffled on the idea when interviewed in May 2021. “As a pure fan to have… it’s a really cool idea. But yeah, as I’ve said previously, it’s not something that I, you know, I don’t… God. I hate being given the responsibility of disappointing people,” said Garfield. And while he once again insisted Marvel Studios hasn’t asked him back for No Way Home, he left himself some wiggled room by adding, “never say never.”
All will be revealed when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on Dec. 17. Ahead of that, Garfield will play the real-life controversial televangelist Jim Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, as well as starring in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s semi-autobiographical musical tick, tick… BOOM!
