Dead Space: Is Unitology a Cult or Are They Indoctrinating Followers?

Unitology is a major part of the Dead Space series, often responsible for triggering the terrible things happening to poor Isaac Clarke. Its following is vast, and its worshippers are zealots who recruit using aggressive tactics and strongly-worded pamphlets. In Dead Space, players hear about them causing minor and major incidents, from protesting the handling of Markers to higher-ups instigating Necromorph incidents. While this could be attributed to the Markers causing hallucinations and delusions, they aren’t readily accessible to the public. How the church got so many to join is unclear, but all signs point to either simple cult activity or Marker indoctrination.

The Church of Unitology began when humanity found the Black Marker on Earth, which was hidden for study as it was believed to be alien technology. Michael Altman, now a prime figure in Unitology, was a scientist contracted to study it who was ultimately allowed to be murdered by Necromorphs to prevent the truth about the Marker from leaking. Misinformation was released as part of a government cover-up, making Altman a martyr trying to spread Unitology beliefs. The result was the birth of a new religion.

The religion was built on conspiracy theory-like propaganda by high-ranking researchers who knew of the Markers’ true capabilities. They had seen what it was capable of and saw it as something holding the secrets to evolution rather than a marvel of science. However, what it’s touted as to the public is something that will bring harmony to the world. They believe the Convergence is actually something like the Rapture where believers will transcend death. Many jumped on board, seeing the false evidence in a time where there was unease about technology’s progress and events happening on earth. The rise led to followers rioting against Earth’s government over Altman, which the church has been at odds with. This display of power combined with the evidence fabricated or altered by high-ranking leaders allowed Unitology to grow.

According to in-game lore, Unitology recruits aggressively as most aren’t shy about their beliefs, often handing out Unitology literature and preaching in the streets. There are also recruitment centers, with some members targeted because of how gullible they are. In Dead Space 2, players can see the reach of Unitology first hand throughout Titan Station. There are advertisements throughout the station and a large Church on board, as well as one particular living area having dedicated Unitology statues. In practice, though, the church performs dangerous rites and rituals at varying ranks which are often kept secret and meant to secure followers. It’s safe to say many have likely been recruited through aggressive methods and retained through shady means. While Markers are the iconography of Unitology, most don’t actually get to see them since they’re kept confidential by EarthGov and Unitology leaders. This means that, for the most part, the Church of Unitology is really a cult with some disturbing rituals and retainment tactics.

Dead Space 2's indoctrination logs

However, there is some indoctrination involved at higher levels. There is an in-game log in Dead Space 2 which are the results of a follower’s test to check if they were fit to move further up in the church via indoctrination. It’s unclear what this entails, but it may have to do with a Marker as it creates hallucinations, which would likely provide more evidence that the church’s teachings are true. The originators of Unitology studied the original Black Marker, and most high-ranking members in the Dead Space games have access to one or more Markers, which means they’ve likely been influenced by it to some degree, especially those who have studied its markings. They are also usually the reason for the Necromorph outbreaks Isaac has to clean up as they throw followers at a Marker by convincing them it’s time for the Convergence.

At its core, Unitology is a cult with fervent believers and indoctrinated leaders. The rampant indoctrination doesn’t happen until they attempt to move Convergence events forward, as it’s the only time the public really comes into contact with Markers, the catalyst for Dead Space events and centerpiece of Unitology. We’ll see if more is added or expanded on in this lore with the remake of the original Dead Space next year.
