We Can Be Heroes’ Robert Rodriguez Offers an Update on the Sequel

When the superhero kids’ movie We Can Be Heroes hit Netflix last December, it pulled in massive numbers, and the streaming service announced plans for a sequel not even two weeks after the premiere. While new information about We Can Be Heroes 2 has been scarce since the announcement, director Robert Rodriguez assured fans that the sequel is still happening.

Rodriguez was asked by Collider if the movie could possibly come out next year, and responded, “Oh, absolutely. I love making those films. They’re so creative. The adults have a great time too. Most of the adults in the cast had kids too that couldn’t watch any of their movies. So it’s a great building of a world. My own children work on the films. So it’s like a family affair.”

The director also confirmed that Netflix is still very interested in producing another We Can Be Heroes movie. “[Netflix has] been shocked at how well it’s kept doing. They call it unstoppable,” he explained. “Kids will just not stop watching it. And I think it happened with the Spy Kid movies, but you couldn’t ever keep track of it, because you can’t tell how many times kids watch it on VCR or watch on Disney channel. But now with their metrics, they can tell how many times a household is watching something again and again, through completion.”

“The completion rate was really high, but also the repeat rate was just off the charts, because kids just will watch it in the morning before school and after school every day, Rodriguez continued. “So yeah, they definitely want a sequel, which I’m working on, because it’s a new franchise for them. That behaves very differently. But kids crave empowerment and those movies just hit those buttons.”

The first We Can Be Heroes movie follows the children of the world’s biggest superheroes, who band together to save their parents from a group of alien invaders. The original cast includes many acting heavyweights like Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Christian Slater (Rick and Morty). As of writing, it is unclear if any of the cast members will be reprising their roles in the sequel.

Currently, there is no information about when production for We Can Be Heroes 2 is expected to begin, throwing Rodriquez’s promise of a premiere next year into question. However, the director is well known for working incredibly fast and some have speculated that a 2022 release date isn’t outside the realm of possibility.
