Early reviews for Ghostbusters: Afterlife bring good news for eager fans.
The first reactions for Ghostbusters: Afterlife have started filing in after the sequel screened during Sony’s panel at CinemaCon, many of which described the film as the Ghostbusters sequel that fans have been waiting for since the original Ghostbusters in 1984. Film critic Scott Menzel posted his review on Twitter, saying the film is “the Ghostbusters sequel that I’ve been waiting all my life to see.” He said, “It is nostalgia done right. A perfect blend of classic Ghostbusters moments with a fresh and unique twist for a whole new generation to enjoy.”

Saw #GhostbustersAfterlife at CinemaCon and it’s good. A solid continuation of the original two films. Nostalgia for the original, and a strong turn by McKenna Grace as Egon’s granddaughter. Paul Rudd gets the best lines. Fans will dig it. pic.twitter.com/MgBXmEVWqz

Menzel is not the only viewer to share this view, as actor Josh Gad also confirmed that Afterlife is “everything you’ve been waiting for and so much more.” He also said that fans should “bring tissues” for their viewing. Reporter Jeffrey Harris also confirmed that the film “does have a lot of callbacks but it’s a nostalgic homage for the franchise.”
“A solid continuation of the original two films,” said Managing Director for CinemaBlend Sean O’Connell, who also noted the film’s “nostalgia for the original,” as well as “a strong turn by McKenna Grace as Egon’s granddaughter. Paul Rudd gets the best lines. Fans will dig it.”
Directed by Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows up the original Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II. The third film will release in theaters this November following delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The early reviews for Afterlife fall in line with comments made by Bill Murray, who starred in the original two films and will reprise his role in Afterlife. In a previous interview, Murray stated that Reitman’s project is more an homage to the original film rather than the sequel or the 2016 reboot.
“[Director Jason Reitman] had a really, really wonderful idea that he wrote with another wonderful guy that I got to work with, Gil Kenan, who made City of Ember,” Murray said in April. “The two of them wrote a Ghostbusters movie that really brings it back to life. It really has the feel of the first one, more than the second one or the girls’ one. It has a different feel than two out of four.”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife features newcomers Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. They are joined by franchise mainstays Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, as well as Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 11.
