James Gunn shared behind-the-scenes photos of the making of the most challenging scene in The Suicide Squad.
The writer/director posted the pictures to Instagram, showing crew members in a flooded office area with David Dastmalchian in costume as Polka-Dot Man, waiting for filming to start. “Flood office. Drain. Repeat,” the caption read. “Of the many difficult scenes to shoot in #TheSuicideSquad the flooding and collapse of the office space in Jotunheim was probably the most difficult, often times working all day for just a few seconds of film.”
Since the release of The Suicide Squad, Gunn has been open about the work that went into making the superhero sequel. He recently spoke on another of the film’s action setpieces, in which Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) fights her way through an army of palace guards accompanied by bursts of cartoon flowers and birds along with all the blood. In particular, Gunn mentioned that what he dubbed “Harley-Vision” was partially inspired by one of his earlier works, the 2012 action game Lollipop Chainsaw.
“In that game, which I did with [game designer Suda51] in Japan, I always loved the way that the hearts and beautiful little things came out of people mixed with blood,” Gunn said. “So a lot of it goes back to that, the aesthetic of mixing this horrible gore with Harley’s starry-eyed way of looking at life and creating Harley-Vision basically. So that was something that came on very early. It was in the first draft of the script.”
The Suicide Squad is currently in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max.
