- Welcome to Free City – Delve into the reality-skewing universe that is Free City, as revealed by director Shawn Levy, the cast, and its inventive creative teams. Find out how they transformed a real metropolis into a virtual playground where anything is possible.
Free Guy centers on Ryan Reynolds’ Guy, a seemingly ordinary man who discovers he’s actually a non-playable character in a massive video game world created by Taika Waititi’s villainous Antoine.
While most of the pandemic-era box office successes have been franchise films such as Godzilla vs. Kong or A Quiet Place Part II, Free Guy is arguably the only original IP released exclusively in theaters to find its footing since Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in August 2020. It also just landed the best second weekend of the 2021 summer box office after pulling in an additional $18.8 million for a worldwide total of $111.91 million.
With all this in mind, it should come as little surprise that 20th Century Studios parent company Disney is already interested in a Free Guy sequel. “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging Free Guy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel,” Reynolds tweeted in mid-August. “Woo hoo!! #irony.”
Free Guy is now in theaters.
