With the upcoming release of The Matrix 4, looming fan theories are kicking into high gear. Fans noticed immediately that the announced cast had a glaring omission. Laurence Fishburne, who plays Morpheus in the original trilogy, was suspiciously absent, and the actor has confirmed that he was not approached to appear in the sequel.
The news set the internet alight and had many fans speculating about how this character’s critical role within that universe would be represented in the upcoming film. A popular theory has arisen surrounding Trinity, who tragically dies in the third film, suggesting that she may return as a rogue program inside the Matrix where Neo chose to stay with her.
10 Neo Should Return To Reality
At the end of The Matrix Revolutions, Neo seemingly sacrifices himself to end the war. He bargains for the lives of those who want to return to the real world so that humanity can continue. In so doing, he returns his code to the Matrix, effectively resetting it as intended.
With the upcoming film showing his return, we can safely assume that we will pick up with our hero still inside the Matrix, living out his life with a construct of Trinity. Neo should reject this made-up reality as he did in the original film when Morpheus recruited him.
9 Trinity Should Realize She Isn’t Human
With Trinity dead in the real world, the only way she could return is inside the Matrix. The film should explore this aspect of the character, digging into what it means to be human. Trinity’s awareness of what she truly is would be akin to Morpheus and his awakening.
This puts the character in a difficult situation as she is no longer human and humanity are no longer her people. However, she can still play a vital role in ending the war if she, as a rogue program, causes problems for the machines inside the simulation of the Matrix.
8 Neo Should Help Train New Recruits To Fight The Machine Threat
In the event Neo has become disillusioned with an alternate reality he has created, he should assume the role of Morpheus, freeing minds from the simulation and recruiting them to the human cause.
The first film focused on Morpheus’s patience and faith in awakening and training the newly freed Neo. Not only did he train Neo, but Morpheus acted as a guide, a teacher, and a savior. As his mentor did, Neo should pass down all that he’s learned to the inevitably newly free minds that he breaks out of the Matrix.
7 Trinity Should Remember The Faith That Guided Her
A constant theme of the series has been Trinity’s faith. In particular, she was told that she would fall in love with The One. However, as the films played out, audiences began to question if this was simply another layer of control.
The Oracle tells Trinity that it is her destiny to fall for Neo, but she may have been manipulated so that she would support Neo when the time came. Still, her faith in Neo remained unwavering, and she was willing to put her life on the line for his sake, as Morpheus had done.
6 Neo Should Become A Leader, Not Just A Hero
A lot of the original trilogy focuses on Neo’s path toward becoming The One. However, most of this happens quietly, either by himself or during conversations with individuals that bring about a form of spiritual realisation.
Morpheus, by contrast, is a leader who rallies his people, gives speeches that reinforce his crew’s resolve, and continues his search for an end to the war in earnest. Neo needs to grow as a character, earning his role as not just a lone hero but as a true leader of his people.
5 Trinity Should Return To Recruit A New Generation
Before she helped to awaken Neo, Trinity had been running missions with Morpheus, freeing the minds of numerous others who were willing to see the truth and fight alongside them. While we still don’t know quite how Trinity will appear in the upcoming film, this aspect of her shared experience with Morpheus should be expanded upon.
We know that the Merogvingian is set to return, and if Trinity truly is a rogue program, she should delve into the hidden places inside the Matrix to find others like her, recruiting them to the side of good.
4 Neo Should Learn To Let Go Of His Love
Fan speculation suggests that after Revolutions, Neo has decided to return to the Matrix where he could live out his virtual life in peace with Trinity by his side. If this is true, then the hero may need rescuing from a prison of his own design.
The relationship between Morpheus and Niobe gets little screen time, but it is apparent that the former lovers had to split up. Niobe is not a believer in the prophecies that guide Morpheus, and their relationship suffered due to his dogged pursuit of ending the war with the machines.
3 Trinity Should Leave Neo Behind & Move Forward
In the event Trinity has no way to escape the Matrix and return to her physical form, she may have to say a final goodbye to Neo. With both characters straddling the divide between the physical and digital world, it may be impossible for their relationship to continue.
As was the case with Morpheus and Niobe, the heroine may need to accept her fate and give up on the relationship so that both she and Neo can go on living in their separate worlds. It may be that to defeat whatever new threat has arisen they must be apart, and Trinity must learn to live without her human companion.
2 Neo Should End The War For Good
Neo appears to successfully negotiate peace between humanity and the machines at the end of Revolutions. He is told that this peace cannot last, and the humans who remain inside the simulation are given a choice: To unplug or stay within the Matrix.
The new film may present Neo with the dilemma of destroying the Matrix to save humanity or facing off against them to save a digital facsimile of Trinity. Inevitably, he remains the hero of the film series and should follow through on the goal of his mentor. Morpheus would want to free his people and end the war once and for all.
1 Trinity Should Lead Her Own “People”: Marginalized Sentient Programs
Though it may upset some viewers, Trinity may well be stuck inside the simulation. If this is the case, she should assume the role of her former captain, Morpheus, as a shepherd for the enlightened. Though not of humanity, but of her own people.
The Matrix Revolutions introduced audiences to Sati, the child of two rogue programs. In the years since that film, an entire society of sentient programs may have been born. The film could explore themes of a marginalized people who are unwanted within the system that created them.
