There are few magical beings in the Marvel universe stronger than Stephen Strange. Except for the Scarlet Witch when she’s in a rage, the title of Sorcerer Supreme is rightly his. After all, Dr. Strange has beaten the seemingly omnipotent Dormammu to a standstill several times.
However, that’s on Earth-616 and its subsequent parallel universes. When it comes to his fellow mages within the anime world, Dr. Strange has some serious competition. There are plenty of witches and wizards who’d give Stephen a run for his money.
10 Julius Novachrono Has All The Time In The World (Black Clover)
How would Dr. Strange know Black Clover’s Julius Novachrono has temporal skills far beyond the Eye of Agamotto? He simply needs to look at the anime wizard. The man is in his mid-40s, yet thanks to the use of stored time, Julius revived himself to resemble a 13-year-old.
The fact Julius has such a stockpile reveals the character’s temporal powers. With his Time Magic, Julius speeds up or slows down the environment around him, stopping time completely or forcing it to run in reverse. When up against an enemy, Julius utilizes Restraining Magic to hold this foe in a time loop.
9 Meliodas Is Well-Versed In Demonic Enchantments (Seven Deadly Sins)
When first introduced in The Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas is rather unassuming. He’s the young owner of the renowned Boar Hat tavern. Calm most of the time, he flies into a rage when someone he cherishes is harmed or someone tries to take Lostvayne, his magical sword. Yet, if Dr. Strange got behind this humble exterior, he’d find a 3,000-year-old demon with nearly limitless power.
This is even before Meliodas absorbed the powers of others, including the Ten Commandments. His greatest ability is Full Counter, which allows him to deflect a magical attack and throw it back at his opponent with greater power. Thus, if Dr. Strange made use of the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, the young demon could throw them back with more strength. As a result, Stephen would end up tightly bound in his own magical prison.
8 Megumin Uses Her Magic To Make Things Explode (KonoSuba)
Sure, Dr. Strange has the capacity to blow things up with his magical energy blasts. However, that isn’t his main power. On the other hand, it’s a specialty of KonoSuba‘s Megumin.
When necessary, the Crimson Demon can call upon magic that creates a devastating incendiary explosion. Megumin has gotten so good at this that she can conjure up these detonations without uttering a word. Alas, there’s a downside to this power: Megumin lets her other amazing capabilities falter because she focuses her energies on making things go boom.
7 Shirou Emiya Is A Spellcaster Outside The Normal Magi Realm (Fate/Stay Night)
Shirou isn’t your typical magus, at least in the world of Fate/Stay Night. He’s a self-taught Spellcaster who doesn’t have an inheritance of magi from his family. Sadly, they died in the Fourth Grail War.
This is what drives Shirou to greatness with his powers. He doesn’t want history to repeat itself in another war, so he works hard to learn spells on his own. Though it’s similar to the way Stephen learned some of his magic, the Sorcerer Supreme’s studies originally had selfish motivations. Shirou is completely selfless.
6 Lina Inverse Is Adept In Black And White Magic (Slayers)
Dr. Strange’s mysticism is pure white. It has to be since he’s the Earth’s main protector against darker magic. It’s rare for Stephen to delve into the dark side during his adventures.
This would cause issues if Dr. Strange ended up facing Lina Inverse from Slayers. Despite her youth, Ms. Inverse is an incredibly powerful magician. Not only is she a master of white magic, Lina also has the ability to pull power from darker elements. To put it another way, this character isn’t kidding when she declares herself a Magical Genius.
5 Homura Akemi Is A Master Of Time Magic (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
Like Fate/Stay Night’s Shirou Emiya, Homura Akemi is totally selfless. It’s not seen on her surface, where she seems cold and distant. However, that façade exists to shield herself from the suffering she’s seen as a young Magical Girl.
This selflessness is what earned Homura her immense temporal powers. After the deaths of those she cared about, she wished she could be strong enough for them. Hence, she gained a shield that turned back time and she has a seemingly infinite number of chances to set things right. To put it another way, Homura has the power of Groundhog Day.
4 Howl Is A Powerful Mage Who Can Wiggle Out Of Tough Spots (Howl’s Moving Castle)
Howl Jenkins Pendragon, the protagonist of the classic Howl’s Moving Castle series, is one of the most powerful wizards in the dimension of Ingary. He has the ability to transform into regular animals and large, horrific beasts, and that’s only a few of his many natural skills.
Thing is, Howl doesn’t like using these skills. He’d rather slither out of a conflict instead of fighting. This is a problem for Dr. Strange; though their power levels are probably even, Howl could find a way to charm himself out of a duel. As he returned to his own dimensional plane, Stephen would scratch his head and wonder what just happened.
3 Louise Has The Power To Void Magic (Zero No Tsukaima)
Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière, the main female protagonist of Zero No Tsukaima, is the gold kryptonite of the anime universe. In the world of Superman, this form of kryptonite does something other than killing the Man of Steel like the green variety: it strips him of his powers forever.
Dr. Strange risks suffering the same fate if he encounters Louise. She has the ability to void magic. Actually, she’s just one of four people who have the power. Despite the fact Louise has trouble casting this spell, one good shot eliminates Stephen’s powers forever.
2 Natsu Dragneel’s Magic Has Some Serious Firepower (Fairy Tail)
Granted, Dr. Strange calls upon the Flames of the Faltine to generate fire-related powers when needed. But it isn’t his main ability. In certain environments, he has trouble calling upon the cosmic beings that send him the power.
This is certainly not the case with Natsu Dragneel of Fairy Tail. The mage is filled with Dragon Slayer Magic that permits him to absorb fire to replenish his energies. Plus, his ability to eat flames generates invulnerability to them. In a fight, Natsu has the power to release the fire from his lungs. Unless he battles someone with ice magic, Natsu is pretty unbeatable.
1 Usagi Tsukino Has The Power Of Love On Her Side (Sailor Moon)
Harry Potter isn’t the only person who has the power of love inside him. Usagi Tsukino, the one named Sailor Moon, also has this ability. It’s what makes her the most powerful among the Sailor Scouts.
Her possession of the Silver Crystal gives her nearly omnipotent abilities. She could use it to restore an entire destroyed world, though the use of this power considerably weakens her. Nevertheless, she could defeat Dr. Strange by restoring him to his original form of a narcissistic, money-grubbing surgeon.
