Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima was released last summer to widespread acclaim and praise, with the story of Jin Sakai protecting his home islands from an invading Mongolian force finding a spot in the hearts of many PlayStation fans. Having come out just before the transition to the new console generation, the developer announced that the game was getting a PlayStation 5 upgrade and a director’s cut with several new additions.
The move appears to be part of a wider approach by Sony at bringing some of the PlayStation 4‘s biggest and best titles to the PS5, with Hideo Kojima’s mind-boggling adventure Death Stranding also receiving its own director’s cut later this year. As well as exploiting the improved hardware of the PS5, these director’s cuts are also coming with new content to tempt those who played them the first time around to take a second dip into these PlayStation exclusives.
Iki Island
The most notable feature of the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the addition of a brand new island for players to explore and a new chapter in Jin’s quest to complete. Iki Island has also fallen victim to the Mongolian invasion but has received a very different type of Mongol force on its shores. On this new island, Jin will face the forces of Ankhsar Khatun, a powerful shaman who has unleashed a mysterious evil on the inhabitants of Iki. Iki Island also brings with it a personal story for Jin and his family, one that he must confront head-on in his journey to becoming The Ghost.
New Customization
As well as new quests, players taking the trip to Iki Island will also discover more ways to play as Jin Sakai. Players will have new techniques to expand their arsenal and fighting styles to use against Iki Island’s new enemy types. Aesthetically, the new territory also has some new armor for Jin to adorn himself with as he continues his quest and offers players the option to hide elements like Jin’s bow and quiver to suit their own aesthetic. Plus, the director’s cut also brings with it options to customize your horse, as well!
PS5 Upgrades
Like many other games, the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is also harnessing the power of the PS5. As expected, the potency of the hardware means that performance will be improved across the board. Players upgrading to the director’s cut on PS5 can expect the system’s signature improved load times, enhanced visuals and use of the PS5’s 3D audio capabilities. The expanded story of Jin Kasai will also take advantage of the DualSense’s haptic feedback in single-player and multiplayer.
Also exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version are the improvements made to the Japanese lip-sync in cutscenes. Whilst the original release allowed players looking for a more authentic samurai experience to play in Japanese with subtitles, cutscenes were made with English in mind, meaning that characters’ mouths moved differently to the Japanese audio. Thanks to the power of the PS5, the Japanese lip-sync is now included, making for a more immersive experience.
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is available now on PS4 and PS5.
