WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for the Superman & Lois Season 1 finale, “Last Sons of Krypton,” which aired Tuesday on The CW.
The penultimate episode of Superman & Lois ended with Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner) eradicating Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin), transferring the consciousness of his villainous father inside the teenager. Superman used all of his abilities to find his son, but he simply couldn’t locate him. Now, as the season finale begins, Zeta-Rho enacts his plan to destroy humanity. He instructs his son, now powered by the Eradicator, to bring the Kryptonians Defense Council back before the two separate. While Morgan Edge heads back toward Smallville, Zeta-Rho travels to a volcano, where he plans on drawing Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) out.
After Edge smashed his car, General Sam Lane (Dylan Walsh) gets rescued by Jonathan (Jordan Elsass), who brings Kyle Cushing and Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui) to the scene of the accident. They help the General get out and take him back to the DoD’s command center, which is currently overrun with angry Smallville residents, who are still upset over their hometown’s military occupation. Sam, Lana and Kyle try to calm everyone down, but they are all stunned into silence when Morgan Edge returns, flying over the crowd. The villain forms an energy barrier and proceeds to eradicate a handful of Lane’s best soldiers.
After searching all over the world for his son, Superman finally finds Jordan next to the volcano. The two share a heartwarming reunion, but it’s cut short when Zeta-Rho takes control of Jordan all over again, engaging the Man of Steel in a fight. However, Superman isn’t willing to fight back against his son, a fact that Rho uses to his advantage. Eventually, however, the villain disappears. Superman returns to Smallville, only to learn of Edge’s attack. He, John Henry Irons (Wolé Park) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch), then devise a plan to stop the Kryptonians: Superman will take care of the Defense Council, while John Henry will use his solar weapons to take care of Edge. As for Lois, she plans on using the Kryptonian technology that allowed Edge to explore Kal-El’s memory on Jordan, hoping to use it to get through to him.
John Henry modifies his hammer, weaponizing it with his solar weaponry before he teams up with Superman. The two head to the mines, and a big battle takes place between the Defense Council and Zeta-Rho. During the fight, Jordan is briefly knocked unconscious, which allows John Henry to fly him back to Lois. She uses the Kryptonite technology on Jordan and gets through to him, purging Zeta-Rho from his mind while revisiting his memories.
Once the transformation is complete, the soldiers take off, now overtaken by the Kryptonian Defense Council. As for Edge, he heads toward the Shuster Mines, where he finds a depository of X-Kryptonite. There, he unleashes his powers, using them to create a dangerous weapon. The energy barrier he creates grows exponentially, and it begins to wreak havoc on Smallville. Several buildings catch fire as people rush to take cover, while Lana and Kyle do their best to keep everyone safe.
With his power reserve dropping rapidly, John Henry flies into the atmosphere for the final part of his and Superman’s plan. After the Man of Steel takes care of the Defense Council, he finds Edge inside the mine, and he uses all of his strength to simply keep him in place. Irons throws his solar-powered hammer straight into the mines from the stars, where it punches through Edge’s energy barrier and takes out the Eradicator.
Smallville is safe, and Edge is down for the count, but Irons falls back toward the Earth with no more power. He accepts his fate and emotionally gets ready for death, but Superman saves him just in time. The two heroes then stand triumphant, with the Kryptonians and Edge finally defeated for good.
Once the entire crisis is over, life in Smallville finally begins to get back to normal. The Cushings throw a big barbecue party for essentially the whole town. It’s there audiences learn that Kyle was offered his old job back, thanks to his heroics during the attack. As a result, he and Lana decide not to move away, which allows Sarah (Inde Navarrette) and Jordan to remain a couple. Speaking of the two lovebirds, they share a quiet scene out in the fields, where Sarah reminds him that he told her he loved her right before Morgan Edge took him away. Jordan explains that he meant it, and she says she loves him back before they share a kiss.
Back at the barbecue, characters get a chance to reconnect and set off on new paths. John Henry and Sam Lane talk about what will happen next for each of them: Irons isn’t too sure, but he knows that he can’t stay at the Kents — it’s time for him to find a new purpose. As for Sam, he decides to take a leave of absence from the DoD, choosing to put his family first after the entire ordeal with Edge. Elsewhere at the party, Lois finds Chrissy and tells her not to sell the Gotham Gazette. With a check, Lois offers to buy half of the newspaper so that the two can continue working together and build something meaningful where they don’t have to answer to anybody. Chrissy is ecstatic, and she accepts the offer.
Later, Chrissy interviews Superman on camera, where he gets the chance to tell the public the whole truth about Morgan Edge and his attempt to bring Kryptonians back, reassuring everyone that this threat has now passed. The mines are now closed and in the government’s property, and it truly seems like this entire ordeal is over.
Then, back at the Kent farm, John Henry Irons gets ready to leave. With all of his belongings packed, he is prepared to head off on his own, saying he might finally try to connect with the parallel version of his sister on this Earth. Clark and Lois attempt to get him to stay, but their conversation is interrupted by Irons’ A.I. system. It warns them of a ship breaking through the atmosphere, heading straight for the farm. They all rush outside to see the ship crash into the ground, bracing for the worst.
However, who comes out of the ship isn’t some Kryptonian or new enemy: it’s John Henry’s daughter, Nat. Somehow, she built a ship that allowed her to travel from one universe to the other and find him. As the episode comes to a close, father and daughter are reunited, clasped in an emotional embrace. But the hug is interrupted when Nat sees Lois, recognizing her as her mother. This makes the reunion all the more complicated and hints that the Kents and the Irons are not done with each other yet. The two are bound as one makeshift family. And with Nat now a part of this family, it means that their entire dynamic might change in Season 2 of Superman & Lois.
Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 19.
