Marvel Studios President/Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige suggested the current theatrical release plans for Eternals could change.
“I think a theater would be my preference and Chloe [Zhao]’s preference,” Feige told Variety at the world premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. “We will see where we go with it.” This comes just days after Disney confirmed Eternals would be sticking to its current November release date.
Shang-Chi is set for a theatrical release before shifting to Disney+ after 45 days. However, the future is far more uncertain for Eternals and other forthcoming Marvel Studios tentpoles set for release in Disney’s next fiscal year and beyond. In May, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the company would be flexible on how it proceeds with distribution plans for all Disney releases, including Marvel Studios productions. “In terms of going beyond this fiscal year, we’ve not announced exactly what our strategy is going to be in terms of which titles will be theatrical plus Disney Premier Access, which ones will be direct to Disney+ or which ones will go into theaters,” he explained. “But know that we’ll continue to watch the evolution of the recovery of the theatrical marketplace and we’ll use that flexibility to make the right call at the right time.”
Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
