Executive producer Mike Schur is helming a straight-to-series order adapting the 1989 baseball film Field of Dreams to stream on Peacock.
The Field of Dreams series will be a reimagining of the beloved feature film based on a novel about the player Shoeless Joe Jackson. He was a member of the so-called “Black Sox” team of 1919, a group of White Sox players who threw the World Series for cash rewards from gamblers. The trademark blend of baseball, family, the Midwest, and more than a hint of magic from the film will also play an important part in Schur’s series, his first solo writing effort since The Good Place wrapped.
Lisa Katz, president of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, had this to say on the project and Schur’s involvement. “Through the years, Field of Dreams has remained a fan favorite, maintaining its rightful position in the zeitgeist. It’s whimsical and grounded, a space where Mike Schur excels, and we’re looking forward to bringing a new version of this classic to Peacock.”
This announcement came just one week after Major League Baseball staged a special game at a custom-built field a quarter-mile away from the film’s own baseball diamond set in an Iowa cornfield. The New York Yankees took on the Chicago White Sox, wearing throwback uniforms in a game won by the Sox’s own Tim Anderson with an iconic walk-off home run. Kevin Costner, star of the original film, was on hand to do a special introduction before the first pitch. The event provided a huge rating boost and is scheduled to be repeated next season.
Field of Dreams will join Dr. Death, Joe Exotic, MacGruber and Punky Brewster, among others, in Peacock’s stable of original scripted shows. Along with the live-action Ted series from Seth MacFarlane, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2012 film version, Field of Dreams is also the second team-up between the separate television and film studios under NBCUniversal’s banner.
“Field of Dreams is an iconic Universal film title from venerable producers Lawrence and Charles Gordon, that we could only have entrusted to Mike Schur,” said Universal TV president Erin Underhill. “His talent, his love for baseball and his reverence for its themes make him the perfect choice to revisit this beloved film that evokes nostalgia and visceral emotion in so many of its fans.”
