Having siblings can be a blessing or a curse depending on one’s perspective and the chemistry between each sibling. Harmonious sibling relationships are those built on mutual respect and a willingness to be compassionate toward each other. Without those qualities, sibling relationships can get quite hectic. But even the most diametrically opposed siblings will have some kind of love for each other.
Love isn’t always enough, however, and sometimes, siblings need to work to get along with each other. The bonds between anime siblings are just as complex as the tenuous bonds between real siblings, and their personalities are just as diverse. While some anime siblings might share some basic traits, there are many of them whose surface personalities don’t match up at all.
10 Kanae & Shinobu Kocho Have Opposite Personalities (Demon Slayer)
While Demon Slayer‘s Kanae Kocho is a free-spirited and easygoing girl, her little sister Shinobu is a much more serious and hot-tempered individual. When Shinobu is introduced, she seems very much like Kanae, but only on the surface.
Shinobu’s backstory reveals her temperamental, brash behavior while her older sister was portrayed as gentle, compassionate, and forgiving. The biggest difference between them might be the fact that Kanae forgave her demon murderer out of pity, but Shinobu is bent on avenging her sister instead of living a peaceful life as Kanae wished.
9 Seto & Mokuba Kaiba Have A Strong Bond But Few Similarities (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Although the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime initially depicts Seto Kaiba as cruel and mean-spirited toward his little brother Mokuba, the truth is that Kaiba is rather protective of him. Mokuba respects Kaiba for several reasons, and their brotherly bond is touching.
When it comes to their personalities, however, they couldn’t be more different. Kaiba is arrogant and stand-offish while Mokuba is generally naïve and kind. Kaiba takes it upon himself to shield Mokuba from everything he can and tries not to give his little brother a hard time for being a softie.
8 Nanami & Shichika Yasuri Grew Apart In Different Directions (Katanagatari)
Both Shichika and Nanami Yasuri started out as potential inheritors of the Kyotoryu swordsmanship in Katanagatari, but only Shichika was granted the ability to move forward with training even though Nanami was the eldest. Interestingly, Nanami was not turned away for being a woman.
Rather, their father, Mutsue Yasuri, felt he was not qualified to raise someone with Nanami’s prodigious strength and potential. Nanami always conceptualized herself as a monster as a result, while Shichika learned to get along with people and developed emotions over time.
7 Yui & Ui Hirasawa Have A Loving Bond But Couldn’t Be More Different (K-On!)
As the elder sister, one would expect Yui Hirasawa to be the more mature and responsible sister in K-On!, but the fact is that Ui is the one who takes care of the household. Yui and Ui’s parents aren’t around often, and Yui is an absent-minded airhead, leaving Ui as the sole caretaker of the home. But Ui doesn’t seem to mind and takes pride in her responsibilities. Ui happily supports Yui with whatever she needs and works hard to make sure both of them are happy.
6 Edward & Alphonse Elric Share Responsibilities But Little Else (Fullmetal Alchemist)
The Elric brothers are united in their quest to get their bodies back, and they both share a passionate streak, but that’s where the similarities end in Fullmetal Alchemist. While Edward Elric is hot-tempered, immature, and stubborn, Alphonse is compassionate, kindhearted, and charming. It’s often Al who has to apologize for Ed’s behavior and push him to be more patient. Their sibling bond is inspiring, as the two of them respect and support each other without question.
5 Kagami & Tsukasa Hiiragi Are Polar Opposites Despite Being Twins (Lucky Star)
While Kagami Hiiragi tends to be hot-headed and short-tempered in Lucky Star, her little twin sister, Tsukasa, is rather meek and unassuming. The differences don’t stop there: Kagami is more practical and intelligent than her sister, who’s a bit dim-witted and whimsical in comparison. They even wear their hairstyles differently despite being twins. Tsukasa has a bit of an inferiority complex when comparing herself to Kagami, but the truth is that she’s being too hard on herself. While Kagami is indeed more put together, Tsukasa’s kindness makes up for it in spades.
4 Yamato Ishida & Takeru Takaishi Express Themselves Differently (Digimon Adventure 1999)
Unlike his little brother Takeru “T.K.” Takaishi, Yamato “Matt” Ishida has difficulty expressing and being honest with his feelings in Digimon Adventure (1999). He tends to be secretive and keeps to himself while T.K. is more open and willing to become close to others.
T.K. also tends to be more sweet and charming than his older brother, a trait that stays with him as he grows older. Matt does learn to be more open over time, but he tends to lean on music as his outlet. Matt is a talented musician, and he plays both the harmonica and the bass guitar.
3 Each Of The Matsuno Sextuplets Are Unique (Mr. Osomatsu)
Despite being born at the same time, the six Matsuno brothers have strikingly different personalities in Mr. Osomatsu. Osomatsu is probably the plainest of them all while Karamatsu likes to think of himself as cool, even though he’s more of a wannabe. Choromatsu is the reasonable one who thinks he’s the cleverest of his siblings. Ichimatsu is a melancholy loner who spends most of his time with stray cats, and Jyushimatsu is silly, airheaded, and kind. Finally, Todomatsu is the youngest Matsuno sibling who’s prone to being manipulative and embarrassed by his family.
2 Shion & Mion Sonozaki Look Alike But Act Differently (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni)
The Sonozaki twins share physical appearances in Higurashi: When They Cry, as both of them have the same color hair and eyes and stand at about the same height. But their senses of fashion and how they wear their hairstyles are pretty different, as are their personalities.
Mion is more outgoing, serious, and somewhat crude, often portraying herself in a very boyish manner. Shion, on the other hand, keeps to herself a bit more and expresses herself in a manner more fitting for a lady. Mion also tends to be shier than her sister, and Shion is prone to be more mischievous.
1 Inuyasha & Sesshomaru’s Personal Circumstances Made Them Very Different (Inuyasha)
If Inuyasha had been raised alongside his brother as a full-fledged demon in Inuyasha, he might have turned out more similar to his older brother. But since Inuyasha was ostracized from both the human and demon communities since he was a half-breed, he grew up resentful and self-conscious about his bloodline.
This made him hot-headed and impulsive compared to his rational, cool-headed older brother. Sesshomaru’s upbringing as a powerful demon led him to be more cautious about how he expresses himself, making him a stark contrast to Inuyasha’s impetuousness.
