While Titans is still a relatively young show, it’s quickly burned through the history of Robins in the DC Universe. Season 3 will not only introduce Tim Drake, but it will also see Jason Todd make his transition into the more villainous Red Hood.
Showrunner Greg Walker spoke to Collider about why now was the right time to bring the infamous storyline to the show. “It’s a good question,” Walker said as to why Season 3 sees the introduction of Red Hood. “And I think the answer to that question begins by looking at where [Jason] is at the end of Season 2… he’s in exile from the times after the trauma that he experienced through his ordeal with Deathstroke, and the kind of follow-up to the Titans. In many ways, Jason Todd’s always a tragic character and struggling not to be one. He’s basically a foster kid, and a kid of the streets, who wants to find someone who believes in him and is struggling to find acceptance throughout his whole life.”
Jason will spend Season 3 leaning into the show’s original premise of distancing itself from Batman and presenting a darker take on the world of young heroes. And in Red Hood, the series has the perfect opportunity to explore those ideas.
“He reminds me of a lot of people I know [who] were sort of kind of struggling with that same challenge,” Walker continued. “And he thought he’d found it with Bruce, and then he thought he found it with the Titans. And the struggle for acceptance, and his inability to find it in a way that’s meaningful. And some bad breaks, honestly, that he got, result in him having to kind of find acceptance in the hands of someone who has a different… who doesn’t have good intentions for him. So it felt like the right time to kind of segue that with the villain that we were using this season.”
Season 3 of Titans confirms a number of Batman villains exist in the show’s world, and Red Hood and Scarecrow — another new introduction this year — are just the beginning. While Batman won’t be a major player on the series, the Titans will certainly have their hands full with some of Gotham’s biggest bads.
The first three episodes of Titans Season 3 are streaming now on HBO Max. Episode 4 will release Aug. 19.
