Bleach is a long-running action series packed with exciting and horrifying villains of all sorts. Early on, the hero Ichigo Kurosaki fought monstrous Hollows across Karakura Town, and during the Soul Society arc, the Soul Reapers were his circumstantial enemies. In the long run, though, it’s really the Arrancars and Quincy who are Ichigo’s true foes.
These villains have all sorts of incredible powers to bring to bear against Bleach‘s heroes, but not all of them rely entirely on brute strength or advanced swordplay. Some of Bleach‘s antagonists are also clever schemers or tricksters, and some of them have orchestrated truly diabolical plans to conquer the world.
10 Barragan Luisenbarn Has Basic Leadership Skills
Barragan Luisenbarn ranks 2nd among the Espadas, and he has mastered death itself with his incredible powers. But that’s not all he can do. Barragan also has experience leading Hollows in battle, since he used to be the king of Hueco Mundo. As an Arrancar, he is still a skilled leader.
Although Barragan isn’t incredibly clever or tricky, he does have the mental aptitude to lead a squad of Arrancars into battle and formulate the perfect countermeasures to his opponent’s battle plans. He nearly forced the real Karakura Town to reappear, until another squad of Soul Reapers showed up to foil him.
9 Giselle Gewelle Can Trick Her Enemies Into Enabling Her Powers
During the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, a large handful of new enemies arrived: the Sternritter, or elite Quincy. They all have a unique power and letter of the Roman alphabet, and Sternritter “Z” is Giselle Gewelle, whose ability is called The Zombie. Sher can force living or dead enemies to fight for her.
Giselle can be gravely injured without dying, and contact with her blood will turn her enemies into puppets to control. Giselle often uses reverse psychology to trick her enemies into striking her without mercy, thus enabling her power. She is also skilled at turning her enemies against one another as zombies.
8 Aaroniero Arurruerie Is A Skilled Actor & Manipulator
The 9th Espada, Aaroniero Arurruerie, is a Gillian-class Menos that can eat other Hollows and gain their powers. He ate Metastatcia and thus gained access to Kaien Shiba’s body, and he put this new tool to use against his foe, Rukia Kuchiki.
Only a clever character like Aaroniero could imitate Kaien in both body and mind, and he fooled Rukia into thinking Kaien had truly come back from the dead. This psychological trick nearly won him the battle, but Rukia used kido spells to expose Aaroniero’s true face, and break the mental spell Aaroniero had put on her.
7 Kaname Tosen Is A Kido Master
Captain Kaname Tosen of squad 9 sided with the archvillain Sosuke Aizen, and in Hueco Mundo, Tosen was nominated as the general of all Arrancars. This proves that Aizen has a great deal of faith in Tosen’s leadership skills, and it takes brainpower to become a general like that.
On top of that, Tosen was highly adept at handling huge amounts of paperwork during his Captain days, and he is also highly skilled at using an astonishing variety of kido spells. Clearly, he has been studying hard.
6 Askin Nak Le Vaar Is A Master Of Poisons
Askin Nak Le Vaar may act silly, but he is a clever and deadly Quincy who can take on even the strongest Bleach heroes, such as Yoruichi Shihoin and Kisuke Urahara, and stand a chance at winning. His ability is The Deathdealing, and it can turn any substance into poison to kill his enemies.
More specifically, The Deathdealing lowers his enemy’s body’s tolerance for certain substances, even their own blood. Askin can accurately evaluate his opponent like a doctor to adjust the poison threshold just right and create a lose-lose situation for them. Either they get poisoned from excess blood, or bleed themselves so much they die of blood loss.
5 Yhwach Can Lead An Entire Empire & Is Highly Knowledgeable
The Quincy king, Yhwach, has certainly been around the block a few times, and he knows all about Soul Society lore, the Soul King, and a great deal of history. He is not an especially tricky or unpredictable foe for the Soul Reapers, but he certainly knows what he is doing.
Yhwach can use his extensive knowledge to form the perfect strategy to advance his ambitious plans, and he also knows how to make the most of his followers’ abilities. For example, he wore out Yamamoto with a body double before fighting Yamamoto in person.
4 Gin Ichimaru Was A Boy Genius
The former Captain of squad 3 is Gin Ichimaru, and chronologically, he first appeared as a child prodigy who had recently graduated from the Shino academy in just one year’s time. That’s highly unusual, and even Captain Jushiro Ukitake was in awe. And Gin was just getting started.
Gin can easily follow Aizen’s orders to undertake tricky covert ops, and he also secretly schemed against Aizen. He implanted a shard of his zanpakuto, Shinso, into Aizen’s heart for future use, and he nearly took Aizen down with it later in the fake Karakura Town arc.
3 Coyote Starrk Has Incredible Instincts & Insights During Battle
Despite his apathetic attitude, the 1st Espada, Coyote Starrk is a real monster in combat. He faced both Shunsui Kyoraku and Kushiro Ukitake in battle, and he astonished them both with his razor-sharp instincts and analysis of their shikai abilities. He couldn’t be fooled for long.
No matter what tricky games or abilities the Captains used, Starrk could figure out exactly how to counter those abilities. That, combined with his overwhelming offensive power and durability, proves why Starrk is ranked #1.
2 Szayelaporro Grants Is An Arrancar Scientist
Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi met his match when he confronted the 8th Espada, Szayelaporro Grantz. Szayelaporro is a scientist and weapons expert, and he willingly devolved as a Hollow so he could evolve again according to his designs and become the ultimate being. He was once a Vasto Lorde before splitting himself in two.
Szayelaporro can use spirit bugs to collect intel from afar and develop countermeasures to his opponents’ abilities with ease. He can also invent all kinds of items and weapons, and his released form, La Lujuriosa, allows him to disable his enemies for dissection and study later. Uryu and Renji didn’t stand a chance against him until Mayuri showed up.
1 Captain Sosuke Aizen Is The Ultimate Schemer
By a wide margin, ex-Captain Sosuke Aizen is Bleach‘s smartest villain and likely the smartest character in the franchise overall. For decades, he dreamed of sitting on the empty heavenly throne to rule all of creation, and he has manipulated, deceived, and used many people to further his goals. No one sees it coming until it’s too late.
Aizen is a skilled inventor and researcher, and he can also fool everyone with his charming, but false, exterior persona. If that wasn’t enough, he can also create convincing and long-lasting illusions with his shikai, Kyoka Suigetsu. He outsmarted the entire Soul Society to get what he wanted, and it’s lucky that Ichigo and Kisuke took him down in the end. He was this close to becoming truly unstoppable.
