Five years after the launch of No Man’s Sky, the game celebrated by reflecting upon its journey of updates and teasing the next expansion, No Man’s Sky: Frontiers.
On the PlayStation Blog, Hello Games’ Founder Sean Murray wrote a reflective post about how the game changed over the years. Additionally, a new video was released looking back on all the expansions that had built upon the game since its launch, with the ending teasing the next planned update. While no release date was provided, it will maintain the prevailing trend of updates for the game by being free for existing players.
When the game launched in 2016, it was met with a backlash of negative reviews and criticisms regarding the state of its release. Lacking much of what had been originally promised in trailers, as well as suffering from a variety of bugs, it was a rough start for the indie game. However, the developers continued to implement updates to the game, fixing the issues while also introducing new features, such as base-building in No Man’s Sky: Foundation 10 weeks after launch. Murray commented on how that update fundamentally changed the game, saying, “Base building is now such an integral part of No Man’s Sky, but it felt unexpected at the time. Foundations really became the foundation for how the next few years would take shape.”
The game has released 16 major updates to improve the game, with the latest, No Man’s Sky: Prisms, released June 10. The game has also been brought over to next-gen consoles as well as VR. Murray remarked that despite these many innovations, the core experience and goal of the game have remained unchanged. “Watching that video even the team is surprised by just how much No Man’s Sky has changed over the years, but also how close it has stuck to that central vision of building a universe to explore,” he said.
The tease for the upcoming expansion didn’t give away much other than the title. The exact nature of the updates remains to be seen, but Murray suggested it would add something missing from the game’s current build. “In some ways, it is just another update, but in other ways, it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for our fifth anniversary,” he said. While the release date also remains unconfirmed, Murray implied the wait would not be long, saying, “We’ll have more to share on Frontiers with travelers very soon.”
Developed by Hello Games, No Man’s Sky is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
